The second book in a series often drags. This did not. I've thoroughly enjoyed reading the series thus far. There are some minor complaints, but nothing large.

Again, I'm going to pretend she isn't 19. This one felt slow and I wasn't quite sucked in

i enjoyed this more than i thought i would! it was a bit slow for a while, but picked up pace and did indeed suck me back in. i had to reread a few of the world-building historical parts as i started to lose the thread a bit, but overall it’s done well. lots and lots of characters to keep track of, but i think using titles instead of names sometimes is helpful. i will be reading the third book!

Disclaimer: Life at the end of the school year has gotten ridiculously busy so prompt review writing has gone out the window as my mind travels more to escapism than creative thought. From my reading of this book, nine days ago at the time of writing, I do not remember many specifics. I do remember feeling relieved that not only did I remember most of the important plot beats from the first book but also that I continued to enjoy the narrative and the complexity of the relationships Shannon continues to build.

As good as this book is, it very much felt like a second book - and the author had really set herself up for an uphill battle by having to reset almost all of her world building with the shift from Oxford to the London underworld between books 1 and 2. She manages it well but it does throw off the pacing which felt very uneven.

Getting to know more of some of the underworld characters was great - and I'm kicking myself for not seeing the twist on the last page coming which is a real testament to the writing and how engrossed you become with Paige's view of the world.

I'm excited for more but I am hoping that at some point the major world building elements can cool off a bit so that the books delve more into the human repercussions of this world.
