Really enjoyed this read. It had twists! It had turns! I didn’t even mind the shifting POVs, which can annoy me sometime.

My only peeve is that things worked out a little too conveniently in some places. It got a bit predictable. But the twist at the end genuinely surprised me so I appreciated that. If you like thrillers, read this for sure.

i enjoyed the audio version
strong plot, even though I figured out most of it quite early on, and I would have liked to see more of some of the characters + lose ends

In all honestly, I'm not sure how this ended up on my to-read list but I'm glad that it did. It was such a fun one!

Meet the Pines - or well, Matt Pine. His older brother is in prison for the brutal murder of his girlfriend and the rest of his family is found dead in Mexico (mom, dad, younger sister and baby brother). To say that it's a lot to handle is putting it mildly. Pulled into his worst nightmare, Matt now must face the past to figure out what happened to his family.

This book is told through many POV's - we get almost every one of Matt's family and then the FBI agent assigned to his case. It's also told in past and present time. I can see why some people didn't like this format and there was a moment where I didn't think I would either. But the way Finlay laid out the chapters was like peeling the layers back on an onion - little bits of information were given and we just needed to put them all together.

I also liked that through the different POV's of the family, we got to know them in a way that we wouldn't have had it only been Matt's POV. We saw a father grieving for his son who was sent away but not knowing how to connect to the one who stayed, a wife who's grief led her down a path she knows she shouldn't go, a sister who only knows how to bond with her dad through detective work - I loved getting to see each of them. And as we arrived closer and closer to the event, I wanted nothing more than for this family to live. The chapter of their imminent demise hurt a lot more than I thought it would.

While I solved the mystery well before the end, I still was able to fully immerse myself in this story and get swept up in all the conspiracy theories - and man there were a lot. I definitely look forward to reading more from Finlay.

This is the second book I read by Alex Finlay and it's another 5⭐️ read. I think I'm loving the way the chapter where you get to finally know the killer, the killers themselves are always predictable at least to me but the way they are revealed at the end is just perfect. I'll read whatever book Alex Finlay writes just for that final chapter.

Will read anything this author puts out going forward! Great mysteries that are straight to the point!
