I can’t believe this is a first novel!

I reserve my five star ratings for books that will stay with me. The duke I Tempted is one of those books. It has a deep backstory and a unique storyline but I found unexpected. In addition, I love that the heroine of the book is strong and willing to go after what she wants after she realizes what and who that is.

This book was a dark, sexy, angst fest and I'm totally on board for the rest of this series.

This one was quite a ride. I will discuss the 'cheating' portion later in my review with spoilers.

This reads like literary romance. It's slow and steady but also very emotional. I really felt for Poppy and felt it was a steady march towards something.

It took me a little longer than normal to finish this because of the writing style. It was a slower paced read overall. I will applaud the fact that this is a twist on the normal kink in regency. I enjoyed Archer not being the dominate and Poppy's interest in exploring it.

Now for spoilers specifically what the cheating involves.
SpoilerArcher, the hero, is a to submissive. This is what the cheating involves. Him and a mistress but no actual sex occurs. I'm not saying it's not cheating but it is your choice to decide if it is a deal breaker for you. I found it was resolved enough that I was okay with it in the end.

Whew *fans self*. This is SP's first novel and she did not come to play with my feelings. If I ever started a romance fantasy draft (which maybe I should??), Archer, the brooding and devasting duke of my dreams, and Poppy, a wonderfully stubborn botanist and boss-lady in the streets and the sheets, would be one of my top couple picks. Y'all, I didn't think we (myself, Archer, and Poppy) were going to survive this but thank goodness we did.

As someone who got into historical romances with some hesitation, TDIT has to be one of my favorites. And I LOVE that it pushes the typical boundaries and tropes of historicals. Angsty, passionate, risque, and sexy-- these characters and their storylines could have existed today, last century, or in the 1700s. TBH, I can't wait to read it again.

Boy, oh boy. I just don't know about this one.

I love the amount of angst, but y'all...

He cheats. That's...whew. Idk that I can get over that.

Steamy romance involving defiance and desire for independence and the quest to obtain independence through the societal constraints the MC was born into. Goes beyond a surface-level role reversal of having a more dominant woman to include a bit of light BDSM.

The last 50% was the better 50%. There was like... five different romance novels in this one book. There was just wayy too much going on. I loved it! But holy moly there were way too many ideas in one book. I ended up enjoying it a lot due to the fact that I put this book aside for many months after getting about 50% through. Because I had such distance from it, I had the chance to really appreciate what it had to offer in its latter half. I think I'm really going to enjoy Scarlett Peckham's following books.

I liked this book.

It felt very much like the Lisa Kleypas I've read, which I also enjoyed and isn't a bad thing. But it wasn't what I was expecting because I was sold on it from a twitter quote saying this was "absolutely nothing but pornography." And then it had what I feel like is an average amount of sex for a modern historical romance. And now I kind of want to do some research for what actually is the average amount of sex in romance novels. Because I haven't been intentionally seeking out the high heat ones, but maybe I've by chance been reading a skewed distribution.
