So moving to read the thoughts of a teenager going through one of the worst times in human history! Some of her thoughts and ideas were so profound that it’s hard to believe they came from a teenage girl who went into hiding at the beginning of her formative teenage years! Her thoughts on nature, God, and happiness has become my new favorite book quote.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD.
Reading this diary was an eye-opening experience. I went into it thinking I was prepared for the bleak, tragic end but I couldn’t have been more wrong. Anne captured my mind and heart in her first entry and her grip only tightened the more she wrote.
Her writing is the first thing I’m going to applaud. I know how difficult it is to find the right words. The effort it takes is monumental and for Anne to succeed in it time and time again with little to no effort is awe-inspiring. Even in her earliest entries she is insightful and joyful. The restrictions placed on her purely because of her religion do not impact on her appreciation and love of life at all. I’m aware a translator may have popped a few words in or out to improve the flow but the majority of credit goes to Anne: a teenage girl. That’s the one thing I can’t wrap my head around: how brilliant Anne would have become if she’d made it into adulthood. It makes me angry and ashamed to think that her life, and millions of others, were callously ended for such cowardly, hateful reasons.
The content itself is exceptional. Anne strikes a perfect balance between personal, political and observational. Multiple times I felt like I was right in the room, close-knit and claustrophobic but always grateful to be alive. My favourite ‘parts’ were those concerning Anne’s first thoughts on sexuality and the development of her relationship with Peter. The former, not something she probably would have chosen to share if she’d had the choice, really kicked my empathy to the next level because it showed the sheer helplessness of her position. Anne's stuck as the perpetual ‘child’ in the Annex, despite the fact that she's rapidly growing up. Who can she approach to ask her questions? Who won't betray her confidence?
And her relationship with Peter is so…human. It's not like in the films where the boy and girl meet, circle each other for a while and declare their affection/love in a grand, romantic gesture. Anne and Peter are heartfelt, raw and hesitant. Neither of them has had romantic encounters before and it shows. They are knees and elbows and mumbled words and it's so real. When Peter puts Anne’s head on his shoulder and rests his on hers, I swooned.
I’ll end with a few thoughts. I now have an answer to that random query that bounces around the internet, about an empty bench and choosing someone from the dead who will come and sit on it with you. I would choose Anne, hands-down. She grows up, like any other child, but the ordeal she goes through and the positivity she maintains in herself and others is stirring. Truly, she is an example to follow.

Ještě jsem v šoku ...

Knížky o druhé světové válce mě nelákaly ani trošku, stejně jako dějepis ve škole, takže se mě neptejte proč jsem si zrovna tuhle vybrala ke čtení. Strašně ráda ovšem čtu knížky ve formách deníků. A právě tato kniha je přepis původního deníku Anny Frankové. Nutno podotknout, že se jedná o skutečný deník, i když existují lidé, kteří věří, že je to podvrh.
Když jsem začínala knížku číst, připadalo mi, že to zvládají velmi dobře. Měli dostatek jídla, oblečení, a i když Anna se sestrou nechodila do školy, měli možnost si potají a skrz cizí jméno udělat pár kurzů jak angličtiny, tak latiny i francouzštiny. Na Vánoce dostávaly knížky, které si přály i oblečení.
Ovšem Anna nám pak skrz deník začíná vyprávět její každodenní hádky s druhou rodinou, jak se během těch měsíců všichni začínají nespravedlivě dělit o jídlo a stávají se z nich sobci. Nejenže se Anna odcizuje od své matky, ale začíná se uzavírat sama do sebe a své pocity zapisovat právě do deníku.
Později nám popisuje, jak každou noc, když zalehá do postele slyší nad domem letadla, a občas i vybuchnutí bomby, jak všichni postupně začínají trpět hladem, protože nemají nikoho, kdo by jim dodal jídlo, a také jak se do firmy vloupávají zloději a celá rodina se krčí v malém bytě strachy bez sebe, aby je neobjevili.
Anna byla velmi zvláštní dívka. Čekala jsem, že se bude chovat podle pravidel, nebude odmlouvat a poslouchat na slovo. Spletla jsem se. Anna měla na všechno svůj názor, za což byla často hubována, a byla podle všech velmi drzá.
Často rozhovor začínala svými netaktními poznámkami o válce, načež se vždy strhla hádka mezi dospělými o politice a jiných tématech. Matka ji vždy hubovala za všechno co udělala špatně, a Anna si tak svou oporu hledala v otci. Neměla nejjednodušší dětství, protože její sestra byla v očích matky vždy ta lepší, jak sama Anna tvrdila v deníku.
Měla však své sny, cíle … naděje.
Celkové hodnocení
Celkově ve mě knížka zanechala dobrý dojem, i když jsem se během čtení dobře vůbec necítila. Některé pasáže byly hodně depresivní, i přestože si Anna snažila zachovat chladnou hlavu a myslet pozitivně. A při každé zmínce, kdy Anna pomyslela na budoucnost, jaké to bude až skončí válka, ve mě hrklo. Číst naděje dívky, jejíž osud znáte, bylo to nejtěžší.

I first read this as a child without fully understanding the extent of how great this is. One little girl's diary became a voice for hundred of thousands of Jewish people during the time of the holocaust. One little girl's diary became a voice telling a tale of our world's history. A tale that would continue throughout the ages. That in itself is nothing short of spectacular. Frank had heard a radio station ask for anyone keeping a diary to keep as much records about where they were and what was happening. Another little girl without a sense of responsibility may have ignored this and continued as they had began, but instead she begins to give us more detail about the war itself. Even though the book has been translated, Anne Frank clearly expresses an intelligence beyond her years. If you haven't read this, why not?

There is no way to describe this book, it’s a must read. I hope you’ll be able to visit her home in Amsterdam some day, it’s so impressive.
