Everything hurts and I’m dying.
(But in the best way)
I am slightly less confused than I was during the first book, and still having a crazy good time regardless. There is part of you that never really knows whose side you’re on, because it’s easy to see yourself in many of the characters.
I love the themes of doubt and fate and good intentions gone wrong. There is so much here to unpack, and I still feel like I’m missing so much. But there is something so human (and immortal, in this case) about trying to justify your actions because you can’t bear to believe you’re wrong.
There’s a line that I thought was so telling to this series, “Friends. Enemies. … We are men. We have been both.”
That is the wonder of time and perspective. Given what you don’t know now, would you be in opposition to your future self in 20 years? PROBABLY.
I cannot wait to see how this wraps up. I have a feeling it will end me. Can’t wait!

Very sticky to get through, second book syndrome or whatever it’s called but the last 15 chapters or so redeemed the entire thing and James Islington does many things very well. I feel like I understand enough of the world to be very invested, at the same time he keeps a lot of room for speculation and he’s starting to tie some strings together which made for a very satisfying read all over. He’s also good at holding your hand perfectly enough through the story but also leaving you confused in a good way. Worth the time.
