Canyon Sacrifice by Scott Graham

Too many references to size and weight, of not only the main character, but also his young step child and the victims. Absolutely unnecessary to keep reiterating their sizes, as if being a larger sized person has any say in who a person is. I couldn't continue, it's clear the author has some fat phobia and I can't support that.

Debut novel. Started out good, and got better throughout. Anxious to read another one.

I was disappointed in this one. I feel like the description of the book didn't match up with the actual plot until the last few pages, which was a let down, since the blurb sounded really good. The pace was much slower than I expected, and there were a lot of flash backs that I felt functioned to take the reader out of the main action, slowing things down even more. Some of the characters were good, but other important characters were hard to like. I can certainly say that the villain was unexpected but, well, considering who it was, that's not surprising. I was compelled to read to the end, but I'm doubtful that I'll continue with the rest of the series. It's unfortunate. There's some good potential here, but it just didn't work out.

*I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for a review.

I loved the concept behind this well-written and short debut novel, a series of mystery books set in national parks. Who hasn't camped in a state or national park and not imagined the nefarious activities committed by the surrounding strangers? And while this first novel had a few problems that could be fixed by a good editing, the main character was engaging, the descriptions of the Grand Canyon pulled me in, and the author managed to surprise me in the end. I've already moved on to the second book and I'm enjoying it even more than the first.

A decent debut novel set in Grand Canyon National Park. I have it on good authority that he gets better as a writer with the next two books. And I love Torrey House Press.
