This was so boring. It's written so formally, I felt like I was reading terms and conditions. Halfway through I stopped caring about everything and forced myself to finish this slog.
This was good, but definitely not my favorite Holmes mystery. I found myself predicting quite a few plot twists before they became apparent even to Holmes, who I of course feel is the best example of a sleuth, albeit fictional. :) Therefore, I felt like the story dragged a bit, since I was sometimes one step ahead of such a great detective. However, the concept of the story & its execution were impeccable; extremely good work on Arthur Conan Doyle's part!

Felt like reading the story again, after correcting the reading tests of my students. I realize now that this is actually the only story about Sherlock Holmes I completely read and I mean to read another one soon. Suggestions welcome :)

I love the idea of this book - a huge hound haunting the murky expanse of Dartmoor but, for me, the execution of this book didn't live up to my expectations.
Sherlock Holmes hardly even featured in this book and all the investigation was left to Watson bumbling around only for Holmes to come in at the end and explain it all.
I also expected there to be a bit more action but I found it rather slow. Bit disappointed.

Holmes and Watson, what's not to love? Definitely better than A Study in Scarlet and The Sign of Four. Again, I read along whilst listening to Fry's audiobook.
Perhaps the most famous Sherlock Holmes novel, it has elements of gothic horror to it. Very atmospheric and a brilliantly constructed mystery. Nice that Holmes goes missing for a while. As if Conan Doyle is trying to wean the public from the character.
