I felt this book wasn't as planned out as the previous books in the series. I didn't really care about Henry that much and thought that Kit reconciled way too easily, even if he did love Henry 20 years ago. Like Henry himself says, people change an awful lot in 20 years and I think that Kit might have been willing to forgive Henry, but to jump into a relationship the same day they're reunited without hesitation is a bit of a stretch even in fiction. I love Chambers' writing though and was entertained by the book, so that's as much as I can expect. I would like less one-offs in this series and get maybe a longer story or another multi-book couple like the series started with.
Also note that the cover might be a bit misleading since it's of a very young man but the couple here are both in their 40s.

I tore through this in one sitting and enjoyed it immensely- one of my favourite romances of the year and the best thing Chambers has written since the original Enlightenment trilogy. Excellently developed characters and relationships, with a more contemplative tone than usual due to the characters' age but still very achy and intense. I love second chance trope!!!!!!

I absolutely adored this book. I read it in one sitting and I was just absorbed by Kit and Henry’s story.

You do not have to have foreknowledge of the previous books of the series as this is my first book by this author and it will not be my last.
The characters of this book are both so sweet and endearing. Henry’s kind heartedness and Kit’s determination to demand restitution was so sigh worthy.
Henry is willing to do whatever Kit wants because he truly loved Kit and felt bad and Kit just can’t turn him away.

The writing is beautiful and you are there in the time period.

I can’t think of anything else to say. I’m still sighing.

Highly recommend this book.

It was really adorable, I liked the way their relationship developed. And the characters descriptions truly matched their actions.

Henry is the kindest father in England, so after finding out about George putting in the effort to make sure he’s okay (at least it was implied so).

I also liked Kit, I didn’t think I would, but the way he was torn about talking to Henry being a bad idea and wanting to, he was a very relatable character.

The Clara, Peter, Tom subplot line was nice too, I liked the way that worked out and how it didn’t feel forced in anyway.

I'm giving this five starts on pure enjoyment. I finished this book beaming, I adore both Henry and Kit, as well as their families. There was something so tender and lovely about this book, it brought me in and gave me a hug.

4.5 stars!!!!

I have always been intrigues with Kit whenever he popped up in the earlier books and I desperately wanted him to get his HEA.

I will endeavor to make this as spoiler free as possible!

**** Highly Recommended Second Chances****

What I loved....

1. The Characters...
P.S. Excuse the Inspo pics not wearing historical cloths!

Christopher Redford, aka kit, has been a rent boy for years. One night he meets Henry and he catches "feelings". He is Henry's kept boy for many months, and just when he feels that his feelings are getting stronger and stronger, no matter how stupid it is, Henry up and leaves him, without even a goodbye.
Fast foreword 18 years...Henry is back and he brings with him a whole barrage of feelings, apologies and inadvertent secrets. #BetterLateThanNever

Henry Asquith, the Duke of Avesbury, was forced to leave his kept boy kit in a blink of an eye. his family had to come first, but not a day went by that he didn't think about kit and regret the way he left things. 18 years later, a common acquaintance leads him back to kit. he discovers how him leaving affected kit and is desperate to fix what he had done. #MakeAmends

2. The Plot...
In addition to Henry and Kit getting back together, a couple of subplots go hand in hand with their reunion. These subplots go hand in hand with bringing them together, small the role as it may be. This helps the story and the characters be more fleshed out. #EveryLittleThingMatters

3. The Romance...
What starts as making amends, shifts to something more. each time they meet with each other, Henry and Kit discover that their feelings never really went away. despite both of them hiding them from each other 18 years prior. Their love for each other blooms anew and they are both ready to sacrifice and make changes so they could be together once more. #MyLoveNeverWaivered

4. The Heat...
This is not super steamy, but the scenes are definitely hot and they are placed in important instances in the book. Each scene for me was put for a reason, to further develop the relationship, and not just the physical aspect. Henry discovers new things about himself sexually, and Kit is the only one he trusts to do them with. #TrustGoesALongWay

5. The HEA...
It maybe 18 years too late... but is was worth the wait... and that tiny clue as to who the new book will be about.... #IWouldHaveWaitedALifetime #SoExcited

Honorable Mentions:
Both MCs being in their forties! And not Instagram-beautiful.

This is definitely my favourite from this series; stand-alone and built on a very damaging misunderstanding from 18 years ago, and a romance between two mature protagonists who have already achieved a lot in their lives? yesss. Kit especially is great. I saw some other readers complaining that the characters don't meet face to face until some ways in but I really uhh enjoyed the drama of them trying to arrange a reunion haha. Anyway very saucy, god job

For a book with a built in balls-to-the-wall angst concept, this was surprisingly low-key. And mediocre.
