This definitely leans more on the romantasy side of fantasy, which might be part of why it wasn't quite to my taste. The world-building and ideas about magic were actually really interesting, but I got bogged down in the writing. The main character was just so easily manipulated, and it eventually got to be quite frustrating. I also didn't really feel the chemistry between her and either love interest, and the prose could get a bit repetitive at times.

I was invested in this book straight away. I think it was the super strong prologue combined with the narrator of the audiobook, Catrin Walker-Booth. I sort of instantly fell in love with her voice - there was just such a nice quality to it, and it immediately sucked me into the story! She really exhibited Edira's personality and I just couldn't stop listening to this once I started it. I knew I was meant to be doing other things, but I just couldn't bring myself to press stop!
While I suspected where the plot would go, that didn't reduce my enjoyment at all because the journey itself was so good. I don't have much of an inkling about the sequel though, so I'm very excited to go with the flow on that one, and to be surprised by where the plot takes me! I'm really looking forward to part two of the duology, and will definitely be picking up the audiobook format for it!

This book had a great premise and a lot of potential but made a lot of missteps that kept it from being truly engaging. I never felt truly connected to the fmc, so I was never really rooting for her. The plot and pacing were very uneven, and though I don't mind being able to guess a twist, this one was so completely obvious from the beginning that it was almost a disappointment to be right. I think with a few different choices in the writing and editing I would have really enjoyed it, but it was really a huge disappointment to me.

I have to admit that I wasn't entirely sure what to expect from this book. However, I could get the hardcover relatively cheap and therefore I was inclined to just give it a try. It took some time before the book actually grabbed me, but once I started to see what the author was doing and realized that my issues with the romance were justified I was sold. And yes, that does mean that some reveals were slightly predictable at some point, but quite honestly I didn't mind that. The author just built up the story really well. Everything comes incredibly nicely together in the end. And although the book would sort of work as a stand alone, I'm really excited there's gonna be more!

Damn, this was good. Totally got me out of my reading slump. Highly recommend to any romantasy fan in need of a new fix and who likes a gothic world feel!

I liked threadmending and the blight. The rest is pretty derivative and flat in character, plot, and worldbuilding. But if you love the tropes (enemies to lovers, dark romantasy, everyone's beautiful, sassy female protag, love triangle, goth/fae vibes) you'll probably love this
