I initially tried to read this in March and really didn’t enjoy myself for whatever reason, I ended up getting the audiobook from Libro.fm and decided to give it another shot and I’m SO thankful I did!
I found the premise to be extremely intriguing, almost like Fullmetal Alchemist in the sense that there is an equal exchange that must happen with the FMC’s (Edira) healing magic. The only thing she can’t mend is the Blight, which is a super nasty disease that rots a person from the inside out. Her brothers get the disease and she ends up in a pact with an Ever (fae) to research the Blight and hopefully find a cure while her brothers are in a magical stasis.
I enjoyed the gothic world, everything had an eerie and unreal atmosphere about it. Like the Blight, there was rot lurking under the surface of everything. I do think some of the twists were obvious, but I was hit with a couple that did surprise me. This book had me questioning myself often which I really liked.
The pacing could have been better and some of the character work needed to be a bit strengthened but overall I did have a great time and really enjoyed the narration. I’m excited for the sequel, whenever that may be and I’m really glad I picked this up again!

This started off with the most intriguing prologue, I was captivated in an instant and the ending is fantastically set up for book 2.
Edira is a threadmender who can heal people in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately every time she heals someone she gives up a piece of her own life. This has forced Edira to disguise herself so the people in her town and the Evers can’t see who she really is.
The only thing a threadmender cannot heal is Blight. So when both her brothers are suddenly stricken with the disease, Edira doesn’t know what she can do to possibly save them. Enter Orin, an Ever and the head of the Fernglove family. Turns out Evers can get blight too and he is in need of a new threadmender. He strikes a bargain with Edira that would keep her brothers alive while she finds a way to cure blight. Despite how much she despises all Evers, Edira is left with no choice to accept if she wants to save her brothers.
House of Blight was such a great read! The way Maxym paints the gothic vibes is both unique and eerie. A perfect atmosphere for both lovers of gothic fantasy and those looking to test the waters. This book is filled with feminine rage, something that I will never stop loving about a book. The romance was slow-burn and not at the forefront, so I am hoping for more in the next book. I highly recommend to anyone looking to start a new fantasy duology.

I wanted to love it but it was slow and I didn’t feel like she had chemistry with either male character making the twists seem obvious

I loved the magical system built into the story with the threadmender magic, very reminiscent of the science of alchemy in Fullmetal Alchemist; in order to obtain something, something of equal value must be given up. In this case, each time the FMC, Edira, used her threadmender magic to heal, she would shorten her lifespan either by the minutes or even hours, it's never an exact given how much time she loses.
I also liked how even though the Fae in this storyline were immortal, their only demise is the deadly "blight" that has infected many of their own and slowly they deteriorate over time. Fae being Fae, they are incredibly vain and are always conscientious of their appearance. So the fact this blight disease affects their physical forms to the point they have to glamour themselves 24/7 to keep up was an interesting and different way to exploit their weakness.
This book seemed to teeter between being YA and Adult Fantasy/Romance. The love triangle development was there, but the way it played out throughout the book felt very surface level. This book was very low spice with minimal on page spice scenes. I wish there were more chapters with other character POV, but I don't think the plot twist at the end of the book would have hit as well as it did since the entire story played out from Edira's POV.
There is a cliffhanger at the end, which is what makes me want to continue the story to figure out how to fully eradicate the blight, how Edira's threadmender power's work in full and how they came to be, and what happens with the one male love interest after the fallout.

This was my incredible, I could not put it down. Gothic vibes, hidden identity, mysterious brothers, unique magic and a unique and creepy illness, twists, and a moth companion?! I can’t stop thinking about this one. I am sat and patiently waiting for book two. Highly recommend this one!
This was such an interesting read! The plot moved at a pace that kept me engaged the entire time & had me fully immersed by the gothic atmosphere. The magic system also had a unique twist to the typical elemental aspect with the Blight & threadmending powers our FMC had. I loved the slow burn romance, & our FMC, Edira, was very likable. Overall I would rate this a 4 star reads & I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in the series!

I really enjoyed this story! The world and magic systems were unique and the gothic vibes were on point. The author did a great job with the characters (besides the FMC being naive AF). All in all, this was well-written and kept me invested and the pacing was steady. I didn’t love the FMC enough, she had too many moments where it was unbelievable how dumb she was and it was very predictable (I don’t usually judge books on this but there really were no plot twists whatsoever) so I’m not sure I’ll continue on with the series.

After I got halfway through it was a pain to finish. Started off strong. Good world building and getting to know the characters… then all of a sudden I hear this agitating… grating noise. Is that.. naivety????? Everyone is telling this girl not to trust them, she herself knows not to trust them and then she continues to get lovey dovey w the ONE MAN she shouldn’t. She is supposed to be 25 years old, NOT 14!!!! She doesn’t listen to her gut at all and that was so annoying. Otherwise the book was fine ig. 3/5
