If only I had met Menolly when I was younger! I know without a doubt that this would have been one of my favorite books/series. Menolly is a great character for a young adult book-much better than most of the leading heroines these days, in my opinion. She's smart, resourceful, and kind. She isn't the golden child of her Hold, and she has to work hard, as opposed to having everything handed to her. This book is definitely great for younger readers, though I'm not sure if many people my age would really enjoy it as much as it should be enjoyed.

I very much liked this book, dragons and music and finding your place, what’s not to love. I will say, I had to remind myself this book was written in the 70s so certain things did annoy me, but I would have the same issue with any historical fiction I might read so it a minor thing if anything.
Over all I liked it and the characters were compelling.
3.5/5
I look forward to the other books in this series.
