I got a review copy of this from the publisher through Netgalley, all opinions are my own.

I love Jane Austen. She is one of my favourite authors ever so when I got the chance to read this (and some of her other works) in manga format I jumped on it straight away. I overall really liked the story which came as no surprise. Because of this I want to talk about what I didn't like/liked less in this version.

1. The emotions on the face of the characters. This point is mostly for Mr Darcy and Mrs Bennett. I understand that expressing emotion is different in a manga than in a novel. However, Mr Darcy is known as a very closed man. We saw him blush a lot in this book and that did not seem to match with how we get to know Darcy in the original novel. Mrs Bennett is a character full of emotion, even in the book, but I felt like some of the emotion showed in the manga was incorrect. She would be angry when she was supposed to be happy and vise versa in a couple of different scenes.
There is a third character that expressed some emotions that I didn't connect with her and that was Elizabeth. She cries A LOT in this version which in my head doesn't match with who Lizzy is in the original novel.
2. The crazy dramatic poses and looks sometimes. What I love most about Austen's work is her simple portrayal of the world and its characters. She doesn't use crazy, over the top drama to convey her meaning. In my opinion, Austen is the perfect author for introverts. In this book though some of the characters would take on very dramatic poses when some inner monologue was taking place (lonely balcony, blowing curtains wrapping around our main character, tears and more tears). I also thought that Mr Collins looked a bit ridiculous. He is a bit of a ridiculous character but I don't think his looks need to convey it, we as a reader are supposed to see it through his actions and words.
3. The text. Most of the text in the book is a modern/more simple adaptation of the original words. However, two important scenes that most Janeites (Austen fans) are able to quote are put literally in the book. In the original novel these moments felt magical and real. In the manga they feel a bit silly and old fashioned.

So in the end I do recommend this manga but for two different types of people:
1. You have never read any Jane Austen but you would like her try her out but at the same time you feel intimidated to read her work/classics.
2. You love P&P, have read the book a million times, have seen all the adaptations and want to enjoy the story in a new format.

I enjoyed this story, but it took me longer than it should have. It was still very well done.

This was my very first manga! I loved every second of it. Seeing one of my favorite novels turned into something so unique and different from what I know was quite incredible! This story continues to amaze me no matter how many times I read or watch it. Thank you, Stacy King and Po Tse, for a beautiful adaptation!
