Ok, I think this may now be my favorite of this series so far. It touched on so many issues like fatphobia & bullying and how isolating those things can make a person feel- and how deep down a dark patch it could lead you. How important it is that every child feel loved and seen.

I also loved the twist with the Whitethorn Institute twist. I had a feeling something shady was going on there. The more I read, the more I got to feeling like it was more a conversion-therapy-esque situation instead of an actual school trying to help kids move on from their traumatizing other world adventures. I’m so glad Cora and friends got out, but I really hope they go back someday to overthrow “Whitethorn” and make it a better place for children who went to bad worlds. =(

I received a copy of this book from Tor via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Gosh this series just gets better and better. It was fascinating to step outside of the (relative) safety and (relative) containment of Eleanor’s school and experience an expansion of this world. It’s very much a glimpse at the darker side, as the rival school is a completely different ballgame than anything we’ve played before. I loved it a lot. I loved that Cora took control of the reins of her own life, and owned her actions when they turned out to be not so great. I loved meeting Regan again, even though it also broke my heart a little bit. I hope she pops up in the next book too. I’m also very curious about The Headmaster and I think perhaps we aren’t quite done with him or his school just yet. Almost every time I think this series is going to get a little tired, a little same-same, it instead just absolutely smacks me across the face with an incredible, unpredictable ride during which all I can do is hold on and enjoy the experience.

Sincere thanks to Tor for the early copy!

I have really liked Cora ever since her introduction in Beneath the Sugared Sky, and I'm so happy most of this book was about her and her coming-of-age. It's a really lovely installment, and it's one that brings a whole new slew of characters into the mix. Beautifully written with beautiful themes and a lovely installment in the series.

This might be my second fave of the series yet (the n°1 being In an Absent Dream).

I loved reading from Cora, we get Regan again, and Sumi, and it all makes sense and no sense at all, and it's beautiful & painful, wonderful & tragic.

The haunting of trauma, the lenghts one may be willing to go just to make it go away...

How knowing something doesn't mean that it's fixed, that the conceptual knowledge of something does not mean you know it by heart, it does not make it true for you.

The struggle between feeling good with your body while peers around you try to shame you for it. Turning your body into your own enemy.

Trudging the line between what makes a Hero and what makes a Monster, in Where the Drowned Girls Go we embark on an adventure with virtuose villans and wicked heroines.
