Overall, I really liked these four stories. I think I'll definitely start reading more of the John Grey books based on what I read in here.
Perfect for when you need an Outlander fix, but don't have the time, energy or wrist strength to commit to the big books.

It probably goes without saying that this book is essential reading for fans of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series and related works. I really have no idea whether the stories contained in A Trail of Fire would be at all interesting for newcomers to her work -- certainly, there's some well-researched and written historical fiction here, but I have a hard time seeing it being meaningful to anyone who hasn't read her other books and isn't familiar with the characters.

That said, what a delight it is to have the four novellas contained in A Trail of Fire all in one volume! Three stories have appeared previously in other anthologies, but the new one, The Space Between, won't be published in the US until spring of 2013.

It's plain and simple: If you love the Outlander world, read these stories.

Updated to add: A more detailed review is now posted on my blog.

To be fair, I only read two out of the four stories. Not super interested in Lord John.

I ordered this from Ireland, because I just HAD to read the short story "The Space Between" that's only available in this anthology in the UK (for now). The entire collection is awesome, but I would have to say that my favorite story is that of Roger's parents in "A Leaf On the Wind of All Hallows Eve." It's heart-wrenching. But, I'm still reeling after reading TSB...I'm not sure what to make of some of the hints and revelations. Suffice it to say I'm even MORE curious now to see what DG has in store for the final two books. I think some of it will be mind-blowing, well to an Outlander fan anyway. This is a great anthology and I'm so happy I bought it!

The Space Between -- Wow! Ok, as usual Diana has answered some burning questions while leaving us with even more questions to ask.

Technically, I should rate it lower, as I give "The Custom of the Army" and "Plague of Zombies" 2 stars. I give 5 stars to "A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows", which I have previously read, and which made me sob like a baby. But mostly I give this book 5 stars for "The Space Between", disingenuously described as a story about Jamie's nephew Michael and stepdaughter Joan. In the interest of not giving away spoilers, I will say the most important parts of the story are about 2 characters we haven't seen since "Dragonfly in Amber" and they REALLY, REALLY kicked my curiosity about them and the how of the time travel into high gear. Please Diana, please take a detour and write some more about this!

A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows - But...he did... oh, that is just heartbreaking. I almost teared up over that one. And Roger will most likely never know...

The Custom of the Army - Had its high and low points but overall a decent short story.

Lord John and the Plague of Zombies - I'm not a huge zombie fan and this part of Voyager was never my favorite so...

The Space Between - Oh this was a fun whirlwind romance tale!

I enjoyed the Lord John stories far less than the other two.
