The Midnight Girls

The Midnight Girls was such a fun historical fantasy.

I loved the world building of the three witches and their servants, the snippets we see of the magic that’s embraced/not embraced outside of their firmly fairytale forests, and the glimpses of real-world history thrown in. (If I’m not mistaken, the Rusja tsarina is a loose adaptation of Catherine the Great which was neat to see thrown in).

While Zosia and Marynka are technically monsters, you never lose sympathy for them and their relationship/rivalry is well-developed. The side characters are also compelling - Beata, Jozef, and Kajetan are all fascinating.

I’d love to see a sequel or another book set in this world, though the novel is satisfying on its own.

Not the normal characters you root for in fantasy books. It’s a fun mix of morally grey characters with a mission that is pretty low stakes for fantasy. There is definitely a broader conflict happening in the world but I appreciate that the focus remained on the characters goals.

4 stars. This was so much better than Jasinska’s debut novel The Dark Tide. The writing is great, all of the characters are fleshed out and interesting and the plot was fun and paced really well. Two girls, both enchantresses, are competing for the heart of a prince but then fall for each other. Loved it. Zosia and Marynka were both such strong characters and I loved how their relationship developed. I was feeling the chemistry from the start even when they were at each others throats. The plot kept me engaged and everything wrapped up well in the end. I’d highly recommend it. It’s a fun, fast paced read.

Wowowow this book has everything I love: Whimsical fairytale-ish world! Snarky heroines! Gay witches! Gay princes! Cool magic system! Morally gray protagonists! And most importantly: rivals to lovers trope!

I love the way the intense rivalry is portrayed. I love the way the magic system is set up, with the whole idea of the rival witches being called Morning, Midday, and Midnight and having corresponding powers/appearances. I love the dynamic of fire and ice. I love Marynka. She reminds me of Lou from Serpent and Dove . The stakes are so high at the end of the book. I couldn’t put it down.

This did leave me wanting more, though. I wish The Midnight Girls had been a duology, or at least a couple hundred pages longer.

I loved how quickly paced this was and the way the world around the characters was described and how each of the characters had their own magic and each one was unique to the character and the world they lived in.

Having multiple points of views was nice but, felt kind of robbed not having Beata’s perspective. I really liked all three of the girls and i wish we could have gotten more from her character. Beata was a great character but definitely deserved more.

I really wanted more from the ending. I’m just hoping there is another book coming because I devoured this and wanted more. The tension was great! I didn’t want it to end.

This is definitely one of my new favorites. If I could reread this book for the first time again I would.

This book kept me entertained the entire time I was reading this. The main characters were awesome and they will be awesome together!
