This is a great book for kids between third and sixth grade. It is very much a book written for children rather than a children's book that adults enjoy.
This is a fantastic story about a group of friends that is growing up and things are changing, and the nature of their relationships are changing. This all comes to a head through a magical journey the kids take that is actually a very real journey.
Good book for a kid that's struggling with how their friends are changing.

I was pretty disappointed by how not creepy it was, I thought it would be more terrifying. the characters were pretty good though, the dad's relationship with his son is really good and thorough. I wonder what would've happened and if it would've kept his life a bit more...normal, I guess?
Is anything creepier than an old doll? I think not. Wait. What about an old doll made of bones from a murdered little girl?!?! I give you Holly Black's gem- "Doll Bones".
Other great things about this book aside from its creep factor: appealing for boys and girls, less than 250 pages, and stellar characterization. Holly even makes the librarian cool (thank god!).
Can't wait to put this puppy in my tween's eager hands.

Three kids play imaginative games all the time. One of them claims that the doll is really a ghost and they set of on a quest to return her to her grave.
Is it really a ghost or just their imaginations? I didn't think it ever got "real" enough to be creepy. Yeah, some weird stuff happens, but it didn't ever feel like more than three kids imaginations running away with them to make this a scary book. Just sayin'.

I loved this book! I was hesitant going in because it is a middle grade book. I was pleasantly surprised. This book pulled me in immediately. The writing was amazing and I loved the illustrations. Three friends play an imaginary game. When Zach can no longer play, the game is over. Until Poppy has a dream about the bone China doll that acts as the queen of their game. Thus begins their quest and creeping happenings along the way. This book was fun and the writing was perfect. Recommend for everyone. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I just don't think I'll ever get over how exceedingly creepy it was to have the same (unusual) name as a super creepy doll in a creepy book.
Really, though, this book was fantastic. Honestly one of the best books I've read in a really long time. The stories and imagination were amazing and done perfectly and these kids were absolutely 100% real. Holly Black truly and deeply understands and respects kids and this book reflects that.
Also, how could I not love a story in (part of) Ohio, with (for serious - this was perfect) and ? Everything I wanted and so so very much more.
