It's a good retelling of Hellenistic mythos, giving us a heroine's perspective, the mighty archer Atalanta.
The start of the book felt like a lot of mythology was simply thrown in without any need for it, and as it turned out later I was right. So it took me a while to get through the beginning of the book. I was really in the mood for a fantasy with a heroine in it, something that's not part of a series.
However reading this book as a fantasy genre, wasn't that satisfying. It had great world-building, which let's be real is easy, since it takes something already written as a setting, but the descriptions were lovely and easy to imagine. What it was lacking, was having those same descriptions when the action/adventure started. A long fight or flight took only a paragraph, while the author thought it was important to focus on that salt enters the main character's eyes and she was bothered by it. It also made no sense that the main character's arrows fired from one ship to another won the battle for the Argonauts.
I should've predicted that since the first action scene, in which Atalanta kills two centaurs made no sense at all. The centaurs, drunk as they were grabbed her before she could reach her bow, but then, after she got loose, one of them waited to be shot.

Like all Jennifer Saint novels (and Atalanta herself), this book doesn’t miss. Definitely an enjoyable read and one I will come back to

I love Jennifer Saint's novels (Ariadne and Elektra), but I was disappointed by this one. I believe her writing is, on the whole, incredible, powerful and engaging. With Atalanta, I felt that the myth being retold was not malleable to putting a female in the forefront in the same way - the story felt like lots of events where Atalanta was present stitched together, like a series of short stories. Personally, I felt quite disconnected from Atalanta throughout the story, I was not in touch with her anger or her desires, she also seemed to change her mind a lot on what she prioritised, so I felt quite confused by the choices she made and what she became.
