Atalanta

I used to love mythology as a kid, so I am absolutely thrilled about the surge in mythological retelling a in recent years. Atalanta is a badass woman, and I really enjoyed her story—the only thing that’s kinda nagging me about all the wonderful female heroines in these retellings is that they all sound and feel the same; they don’t really distinguish themselves much from another other than their story. This book was good nonetheless!

This was an easy read. It was refreshing to read from Atalanta's perspective with her directness. The story progressed quickly, and I was glad when the main part was passed there was still ample story for Atalanta.

The first 3 sections of the book were quite good, but about the end of the Argonauts voyage, something changed. I don't know quite what it was, but the back 1/3 of this fell pretty flat for me. This was one Makenna and I were most interested in (as Atalanta is one of the few women in Greek mythology who is an archetypal "hero"), so I was disappointed with the conclusion of the book not landing.

Ehhhhh. This book was just okay. Appreciate the concept but felt like it didn’t really do well to convey emotions of relationships and most events felt like a catalyst for the next event only to have it end in the protagonist throwing away her resolve. Not my favourite book but not the worst either.

I really liked this! I didn’t know much about the story of Jason and Medea before — only from the glimpse you see of them in Circe, and the basics of the Argo and the Golden Fleece. This was such a unique telling of that tale, alongside Atalanta’s experiences before and after. I loved Meleager and loved Hippomenes more. I bet from another perspective, Atalanta’s story is seen as being cursed, but from her POV it was really cool to see her strength and independence, and to see her priorities change as she grew.
