What a clever book. I think I realized the biggest factor that distinguishes a good duology from a good trilogy/series and that is cleverness. Duologies do not have nearly as much space to raise as many questions/plot holes/relationships. In such, the duologies I have read always have a kick of cleverness and the childhood friends to forgotten to enemies to reluctant allies was such a satisfying transition and reminded me much of the Dance of Thieves duology. What a great book to get back into my fantasy novels since around January.

The book was not as great as others made it seem. It was a pretty slow book, as everyone had said, and it was hard to get through the beginning. Nothing was happening until Renata got back into the castle. And even though
Spoilershe had successfully got into the castle and was put among the Moria ranks,
it was still slightly boring. I think where I ended, things were about to happen because
SpoilerMargo and Saiyda appeared and the king almost died,
but it wasn't enough for me to stay and finish the book. If I were to come back and read the book again, I would definitely skip the first few chapters and start at the place where Castian's ex-fiancee appeared. And from what I have read of other's reviews, the most exciting events happened towards the end of the book.

I had trouble getting into this book at first. Considering the trope that was being used, I asked myself "what was different about this one?" As the novel progressed, I found myself immersed in Ren's world through the vivid descriptions of the author. It was an enjoyable read. I just hope the sequel will be better.

I have to get the sequel to see how it ends. I like the characters and the plot twist between Nati/Renata and Castian was a nice surprise. Dez just fleeing in a ship was a little disappointing and the betrayal of Margo was frustrating. But all the different plot twists really kept me invested.

Started out strong, saw the twist coming, the end felt like a cop out.

this book used some of my most dreaded troupes. plus the main character made the most insane decisions. and yet i enjoyed every single crazy moment of this book. so much so i preordered the sequel moments after finishing it.

now if someone could leapfrog us to May 11, 2021 so i can get my grabby hands on [b:Illusionary|36152363|Illusionary (Hollow Crown, #2)|Zoraida Córdova|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1599582263l/36152363._SY75_.jpg|57758203] to find out what happens next that would be swell!

It’s really, really rare for me that I don’t finish a book. Like…soooooo rare. And usually it’s because there are typos and/or the writing is just atrocious!

With Incendiary, however, I think my inability to finish this one was just due to personal tastes and preferences.

To sum it up–I was bored. Interestingly, enough, I thought the prologue was pretty good. And it made me think that I may really enjoy the book.

But, it didn’t take long for me to realize that I couldn’t get past–to me–what was the same, tired, story-line.

It’s so difficult for me because, honestly, Ms. Cordova isn’t a bad writer. She knows how to tell a story. I just wasn’t interested in this one.

I’m not lying when I say I’m going to give the author another chance. Just maybe not with this series.

A beautifully written story that I can’t wait to continue in the next book. I loved how well the story incorporated elements of the Spanish Inquisition.
