3.8 AVERAGE

3.75 stars. This was my first Lisa Kleypas book and I really enjoyed it! I liked Annabelle and Simon. I liked all of the side characters. The story line and writing were good. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series and more books my this author.

Okay....

lighthearted medium-paced

This was enjoyable, but admittedly, it wasn't a stand out read among all the historical romances I've read this year so far.

I will continue the series though because I'm interested in the other wallflowers' stories.

cute historical romance with some (mildly clumsy) musings on industrialization and class. there was tons of UST in this and the characters were genuinely likable and had actually INTERESTING interactions, so this gets four stars. A great book.

Gosh darn it, this book was about 100 times better than I expected. Not the stuff of great American literature, to be sure, but the kind of romance novels I'd rather read.

To start off, I was extremely pleasantly surprised by the character building, scene building and historical details. The groups of "Wallflowers" are delightful and I would be happy to hear about all of their journeys to find husbands.

Simon was pretty damn sexy, not going to lie. If I'm being honest, I pictured him like Rhett Butler the whole time. Must be that self-made male thing. The slow burn of their relationship was actually refreshing, compared to what I expected. And really, there wasn't that much sex in this book, and I think that's a good thing.

Annabelle was fine. I appreciated her pride and strength and willingness to go beyond her comfort zone. The way she came about to realizing her feelings for Simon (at the end of the book, not the middle) were well done. I do wish her "beauty" wasn't mentioned so often. We get it.

I find romance novel male character's, "I AM CONSUMED BY LUST BECAUSE OF YOUR BEAUTY AND CHARACTER" a little grating, and this was no different, but Simon made up for it with plenty of backstory and character. I'm also always a little thrown by how easily sexual situations arise in these books. In this case it was more like, "Wait who said anything about being a mistress??" I felt that plot point was a little beaten into the ground and I don't necessarily think Annabelle would have conceded.

Overall, a quick, fun read and just what I was looking for. Curious about the rest of this series.

All right, Lisa Kleypas, you have my attention.
