I love the idea behind this series, but this first book wasn’t terribly interesting. The side characters were much more interesting than the main ones. The character development and pacing was a bit jagged, jumping ahead too quickly at many points. Simon’s PoV was too infrequent to be a complete perspective so we really didn’t get much insight into any development there. He felt more like a prop than a participant in the story.
There were also a number of premises to the story that just didn’t make sense - like Annabelle’s obsession with marrying a peer. She isn’t noble herself, and at the time wealthy gentry were a well accepted part of the upper class. What she needed was money not status so why was she so fixated on peers specifically? She should’ve been going after Simon long ago.

Eh, it was not my favorite of the Kleypas books I have read so far. I felt like some element was missing. I am going to chalk it up to feeling like there was not a lot of character/relationship development especially post wedding (until the very end of the book)

Easy, funny, light, fluffy read that was just what was needed.
What a bland book with tedious writing and absolutely no character development.
In like the second chapter, we get the male love interests point of view where he's obsessed with the female love interest for literally no reason. He wants to marry her, and is excited for her to fail to find a husband.
Then he tells her he would never marry... just to make it actually make sens why there is a plot.
Why does he live her? Why does she hate him? It doesn't make any sense either way.

I found this one to be so much more readable than Devil in Winter.
I absolutely DESPISE that every incorrigible yet handsomely devilish leading man in these books so far turns into a mewling simp way too quickly for my tastes.
They come in too soon with the, “Are you alright, pet?’s” and the “I’ll take care of you, sweetheart’s.”
Ew. No. Get away.
Dear god, I hate pet names. Especially when they’re meant to show tenderness when the words are already doing that.
For example, “I would go to the ends of the world for you.” Great. Romantic. Implies the audience of these words is a self-actualized human adult who can understand that that statement already betrays deep love.
“I would go to the ends of the world for you, sweetheart.”
Ugh.
Just doesn’t do it for me.
Again. TV Anthony Bridgerton has ruined me.
Nothing less than, “Do you think there is a corner of this earth far enough away that will free me of this torment?” and “You are the bane of my existence. And the object of all my desires” will be accepted in this home.
Anyway. As with all the enemies to lovers stories I have ever read, there’s not enough “enemy.” Give me slow burn. Give me pure unbridled hatred. I want the hate to be so strong it melts the phone I’m reading these books on.
All in all, better writing and dialogue in this one. The heroes, Annabelle and Simon, are much more interesting and nuanced than Evie and Sebastian. I liked the story. A bit too dramatic towards the end, after they’d already….married
