In a Lisa Kleypas trance.

This book was not nearly as good as the prequel to this series Again the Magic. However, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this. I think I just did not receive enough intel as to why Annabelle was so adamant in believing that Simon was not genuine in his advances. It felt as though that component was done to make up for the lack of surrounding plot in the rest of the book.

Anyway. I am onto the next book in the Wallflowers series now!

Hope I don't get thrown into histrom jail for this, but I don't quite get the hype for Kleypas based on this first read. Not bad per se, but fairly run of the mill HR and I didn't quite feel the connection between the two MCs. Almost like something was missing, maybe it needed more of Simon's POV to understand their initial antagonistic relationship? Also the last quarter felt disjointed and lost the momentum of the original plot. I do however love the Wallflowers as a group so I will venture on in the series to see if it gets better, but thus far I'm not entirely impressed.

Over the past few months, I've been trying to read author backlists and not focus so heavily on ARCs and new releases. And, I've also been in a big historical romance book phase (HR isn't dead!!!!!) so of course I had to read some Lisa Kleypas books.

I started with the Wallflowers because, well, why not?

I love a series about friendship, especially a group of women who lift each other up, celebrate wins, commiserate and support, and show up for the big and small moments.
The whole series delivers this, and I love this for the characters, and also for readers who can see how great friendship can be.

I enjoyed this book, for the most part. Annabelle is slightly boring, but really started to come into her own throughout the book. Simon is brash and bossy and some of his comments were misogynistic and I didn’t like that (e.g., when he offered to make Annabelle his mistress and implying that she should be grateful for it).

This book has humour, emotions, tension, steam, and was overall a fun read. I definitely was excited to pick up the second book and continue to find out what happens with the Wallflowers!

So I started reading this book around three weeks ago. A week ago I had my first round of exams for the semester and because of all of the reviewing for readings I had to do, wasn’t motivated to pick this book up. Oh, yeah, and another reason. Which I will be ranting about down below.

Imagine being in a financial situation so bad that your mother decides to prostitute herself, but you’re still, and I repeat, still being nitpicky on what kind of husband you want. There you go! There’s Annabelle, our beloved heroine! Any normal person would not have thought twice about marrying a man who has money and is um… offering marriage to you many, many times. But, no. Simon Hunt despite all of his wealth (which could stop Annabelle’s mother from having to turn to prostitution) is a butcher’s son. Of course, if maybe the Queen of England was looking for a husband then yes she could afford to be nitpicky, but coming from a woman who doesn’t even have a respectable (none, she has nothing) dowry why is Annabelle such a snob?!
I just could not sympathize with Annabelle every time she “bumped” into Mr. Hodgeham because her mother had gone through something much worse and Annabelle didn’t even care! I tried so hard to sympathize with this woman but god she made it so hard.

One thing I can congratulate Lisa Kleypas for is writing a romance novel where the main heroine is much more irritating than the oozing-with-sex-appeal male. I will be reading the next book though because I found the other wallflowers much more appealing than Ms. Annabelle “Poverty Living Snob” Peyton.

It was a fun read and makes me excited for the rest in the series! (But I got to take a break from historical romance)

Love the wallflower girls!! And live the pining of Simon for Annabelle!
