Annabelle shook her head. “We may as well not bother with dukes, as I’m not aware of any eligible ones who are under seventy years old and have any teeth remaining.” “So intelligence and charm are negotiable, but not teeth?” Lillian said slyly, making Annabelle laugh. “Teeth are negotiable,” Annabelle replied, “but highly preferred.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. What made this book so fantastic was not the romance (although that was quite well done) but the unlikely friendship formed by four very different women. The one thing they had in common was that there were all ‘wallflowers.’ They devise a scheme to find a husband for each and every one of them starting with the oldest which happens to be the one that desperately needs financial support. Annabelle Peyton and her family are in dire need of more funds, they have to mend old clothes and pinch every penny. Annabelle is known for her beauty but the reason no one has asked for her hand yet is the small problem of her having no dowry so she must every trick in the book to land her a husband.
It was a law of nature that only the strongest survived, and the weakest had better get the hell out of the way.
It felt like a feeding frenzy or circling vultures whenever the men got together, they are all anxiously waiting for her last season to be finished and her to reach the point of almost poverty. One man in particular Simon Hunt who is a very wealthy has his eye on her and plans to make sure no other man can have the pleasure of making her their mistress but himself, he takes every opportunity to remind her of the fact. As vulgar as that sounds he does promise her not interfere with her husband-hunting schemes, he has no desire to get stuck in the middle.
A true friend doesn’t let another friend drool when a man is present.
This book has quite a bit of humor in it, especially when the four wallflowers get together; the scene where they decide to play rounders in their undergarments was mortifying and hilarious at the same time. I did get a little bored at around 65-80% of the book, everything seemed a little too happy and I was wondering how Lisa Kleypas would finish the book. But when the ending did come it was worth the wait as we finally get to see Simon and Annabelle’s defining moment as individuals and as a couple. I really excited for Lillian Bowman’s and Lord Westcliff’s book, the tension between them two was amazing.
“I would rather have died in your arms, Simon, than face a lifetime without you. All those endless years…all those winters, summers…a hundred seasons of wanting you and never having you. Growing old, while you stayed eternally young in my memories.”

"i was wrong when i told you that i didn't know where i belonged. i do. with you, simon. nothing matters except being with you. you're stuck with me forever and i'll never listen when you tell me to go. so you may as well stop complaining and resign yourself to it."
giggling and kicking my feet
simon and annabelle won me over from the very first page. both of them were well rounded characters, with great personalities and depth, and i loved how much they craved one another.
i love that there was no major conflict or miscommunication in the story. when we got to the 70% mark, i was so anxious waiting for somthing to go wrong, but instead the narrative just took a more realistic approach and??? amazing choice, lisa kleypas 👏👏👏 can't wait to continue reading the series!

lisa kleypas never disappoints! loved the wallflowers as a group of girlfriends - they each had their own personalities and voices.
loved simon as a character, he was very refreshing in a sense - he wasn’t ashamed of his background or trying to change it, he wasn’t scared of his feelings for her and he was caring. I liked how entranced he was by annabelle and how he played the long game.
annabelle was also a likeable heroine, and I liked how headstrong she was and willing to do whatever it took to save herself and her family.
overall a lovely read! exactly what I needed right now.
