Another book that I though I was going to like bite the dust.

I can't finish this at all. I'm not going to even rate it.

The premise of it being Sleeping Beauty but in the reverse with witches was so promising but it fell flat. What brothers me about this book is the villain motive into turning evil. In none spoiler way (haha) basically he was friendzoned ( I hate using that word so much) by the princess that he love (which he felt like he was entitled to since he saved her from an evil sorceress) but didn’t feel nothing but brotherly love to him becasue he never made his intentions since he left for a couple years. He blames her for leaning him on which she didn’t do at all and pretty much punish her by cursing her son to be his henchman for his evil plot to take people hearts who are in love when he turns 18. I was liking this book until that backstory come out and the book has went down hill from there. Also the main protagonist is kind of whinny since really don’t know how to do magic but her brother is pretty cool. ( Probably the one cool character besides the Grandma in this book. ) I found myself skipping pages and even skipping a chapter because it got boring after that backstory. So I don’t think I’m going to brother and finish this…

O, how much I've missed this the last couple of weeks. How much I've missed diving into a book without knowing what to expect and then losing myself in the story within a few chapters. How I missed reading page after page after page in so little time, just because I needed to know what will happen and how it will all end.

I'm gonna be honest: I had never heard about this book, I had no intention to buy this book. I simply made a mistake. I saw a post with preloved books on facebook, reacted that I wanted a certain series, discovered that I had named the wrong one, quickly googled the wrong one and then decided that I just wanted them both.

And I'm so not regretting it! This book was really awesome! It was fast paced, written in a very easy and fluent language and had a very thrilling plot that kept me glued to the pages! I really loved how the stories of 1500 years ago and now intertwined, how the characters were built up without taking away the mystery behind them and how the plot unfolded slowly and quickly at the very same time. I also really loved the relationship between Merry and her brother Leo!

This book had all those elements I really love. We had a very strong main character, who had to learn a lot before she could rescue the world. We had a mysterious charming prince who had an evil side and therefore became a very complex and interesting character. And we had loads of fairytale elements and winks and nods to Sleeping Beauty, Snow White and many other well known stories that will always hold a special place in my heart.

This was a truly amazing read and I can't wait to read the second book. It's a good thing that my accidental buy included the entire series, because I need so much more!

Merry just wants to be a normal teenager. Shame that's not going to happen. She's a witch - a witch that doesn't want to be a witch, and her powers either exploding out of her fingertips when she's not in control or not there when she really needs them.

But it looks like she needs to embrace her witchy side and fast. Something dark is slowly waking and when Merry and her brother, Leo, meet Jack and discover he's under a centuries-old curse. A curse Merry must now break.

But Merry and those she love must be careful. Being a witch is dangerous, but so is falling in love and a heart is such an easy thing to break. So easy, in fact, that's true love's kiss might not be enough to save it...

Now, this is an odd book. Because there was faults - oh, so many faults, which I will go into in a bit - but it was a fun, addictive read. I read most of this book in one go (a good chuck of the book I read over the Easter Weekend - most of it on Easter Sunday).

The writing was fast paced and you had to run with the story to keep up. I liked some of the characters - mainly the brother, Leo. I really liked him and wish we saw more of his life outside of magic (he's an outsider, like us. Plus, if we saw his life, it would have been more powerful as the story grew) and I liked the hints towards fairy tales (mainly Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent with hints of the Lady in the Lake) and other things (Grey's Anatomy and Once Upon A Time - I really need to stop watching so much telly!). This is very much a book for fans of fast-paced magic.

But, like I said, this book had faults. A lot of faults. Most of which can be summed up in one way, I think. The story had a good idea and plot, but it felt skeletal. There was no real meat to the story. If there was, it would have given us something extra. See how Merry's magic affected her life in school and with friends, see the mysterious attacks (include the most personal), show us Leo's life with his friends and his romantic feelings towards a character we heard of but never met. But because the book is so focused on Merry's magic and the curse, there was no room for anything else.

While I say this book does have a lot of faults, I enjoyed the reading blitz I went on with this book and looking forward to finding time to read the sequel, [b:The Witch's Tears|30796767|The Witch's Tears (The Witch's Kiss, #2)|Katharine Corr|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1476395525s/30796767.jpg|51384717]...

So I loved this.

I'm kind of annoyed at myself because I have followed Katharine and Elizabeth for the longest time on Twitter and have wanted to read this book for the same amount of time and of course I loved it.

Also side-note, I started playing the audiobook this morning and only after a couple of breaks and my phone dying I finally finished this in one day! I was not expecting that! (Also I really liked the narrator too!)

I loved everything about this book. I loved Merry who was a realistic portrayal of a sixteen-year-old girl and I loved Leo with all of my heart too. I also loved the relationship between the two of them as I don't think sibling relationships are explored that much at all in YA so this was a nice change. Also, I liked Jack and Merry together and apparently, I have to read the third book to find out what happens so...

I was just really captivated from the first page and didn't know when to stop so I didn't. I think there were some nice storytelling and I wasn't sure where the story was going to go to but I enjoyed where it did. I also think that the story was grounded, it still kept Merry's problems relating to school at the centre and a lot of the setting was grounding relying on the family dynamics which again I liked.

It also feels like a nice contained story although you do get glimpses of a sequel so I will be on that soon. I just hope that it is not four years later this time because I will be really sad if that is the case.

I voluntarily reviewed an advance readers copy of an extract of this story thanks to Netgalley. I decided to request this story as the cover is gorgeous and it would be perfect to read for Halloween. However, then I noticed it was only 90 pages long (An extract of the exact book)! It is written well and easy to read but way too short. I got into the story but felt the ending just cut off! I must mention that this is the first in a series but not one I will continue reading. . I enjoyed it but I needed more and I wasn't wowed away. But brilliant for readers who enjoy the young adult genre. Enjoy. I just wish I could have read the whole book instead of just an extract but based on what I got to read these are my personal views.
