This one just didn't grab me. I didn't really like the characters for some reason. Kind of a disappointment.

I started out so confused, not realising that chapters where narrated by three different characters. And then I found out that this is the sequel to Chocolat - my edition only says "by the author of Chocolat" so I was a bit put out by that. So that might have influenced how I felt about the book. I only found it to be OK. I can see why some people would love it, but I just didn't.

Good grief, this book was stressful. So much tension. And I honestly don't know if I've ever encountered a more despicable and menacing villain in over three decades of reading.

It was an unexpected sort of sequel, where the main character had lost or set aside most of what made her so irresistibly charming in the first book. The setting moved from rural France to modern Paris, the antagonist was a witch rather than a priest, everything was quite different and unexpected. It was also far more magical than I was expecting, almost like a fairy-tale taking place in a modern setting. But it was a really good story, redemptive and beautiful and pulled you in all the way through. The character of preadolescent Anouk was so well-crafted and believable. It's hard to write first-person children well, and Harris did a great job. The mother-daughter tension made my heart ache just as much as the mother-daughter love did in the first book.

Can't wait to read the rest of the series!

Oh my goodness, withdrawal symptoms every time I had to put this down to get on with real-life things. Think I love this more than Chocolat. Fully immersed in the characters, willing Joanne Harris to hurry up at times with her characters' monologues so I could see what happens next....exciting, fully engaging - wonderful sensory explosions along the way - A must read.

I loved "Chocolat" and was excited to find a sequel. What was interesting about this particular story is that it doesn't just pick up where the first book left off and try to continue the story. It's a brand new story. Brand new plot. We still have Vianne, Anouk, and Roux from the first novel, but it's a new setting, new supporting characters, and a new main character (Zozie) who we can't tell if we're supposed to love her or hate her for most of the novel. I loved seeing the relationship between Vianne and Anouk as they have taken on the names of Yanne and Annie. I loved that we got to see their relationship from Vianne's POV, from Anouk's POV, and from an outsider's POV. That mother-daughter relationship as the daughter enters her tween years is really a fragile and important thing, and it was interesting to watch.

While the whole story wasn't as beautiful and lovely as "Chocolat" was, I still found it enjoyable and interesting. I need to read more Joanne Harris!

This book really added to the first book. I was able to better understand the "powers" and the past that were hinted at in Chocolat. The end was a little wordy..but still kept me reading.

I didn't love this book like I did the first one. It was long-too long. I didn't fall in love with the side characters like I did in the first one. If there is a most hated book character contest, Zozie would win it hands down. But-I'm moving on to the next in the series because I'm a sucker for books in a series!

"The wind has always dictated Vianne Rocher's every move, buffeting her from the French village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes to the crowded streets of Paris. Cloaked in a new identity, that of widow Yanne Charbonneau, she opens a chocolaterie on a small Montmartre street, determined to still the wind at last and keep her daughters, Anouk and baby Rosette, safe. But the weather vane soon turns, and Zozie de l'Alba blows into their lives. Charming and enigmatic, Zozie provides the brightness that Yanne's life needs--as her vivacity and bold lollipop shoes dazzle rebellious and impressionable preadolescent Anouk. But beneath their new friend's benevolent facade lies a ruthless treachery--for devious, seductive Zozie has plans that will shake their world to pieces."
