a sequel to Chocolat, it has a very different feel. Different setting, and different characters other than the main ones. On the minus side, it's a bit too long, starts to get a little repetitious. The ending is...well, predictable and a bit corny. But Chocolat had a pretty predictable plotline, also. What sets both books apart for me is her descriptive power, she is so good at putting you in the scene. Joanne Harris writes cookbooks also, and her love of food certainly comes through. A bit more magic in this than the first, but not to the point of turning it into fantasy. Now on to the third book, quite curious to see where she takes it....

I though Chocolat was better and that this one lost a little bit of its magic, but still, it is a great book.

WOW!! I had my doubts that this book would live up to its prequel... but I was proven very wrong! Joanne Harris delivers once again. This was an amazing thrill, I fell in love with these characters all over again in new ways, and the themes which are woven so beautifully into the story struck me uncannily close to the heart. This is perhaps even more magically written than I found Chocolat to be.

This book was so frustrating, it was missing everything that made Chocolat such an enchanting, magical read. Overall, I'm disappointed.

I might’ve enjoyed the first book slightly more, but this one was still very good. It was interesting to see things from Anouk’s point of view, and Zozie was an interesting new character too.
I have to say I didn’t love the plot line of Anouk growing away from Vienne, or how Vienne had tried to change, but it was still interesting and well-written, and the ending resolved my complaints. I’m excited to read the next one!

Great start, then fizzled to nothing, such a weird interesting protagonist start, but lost all of its capital.

I enjoy Joanne Harris' books and this was no exception. While it did take me a bit longer to get into it, once I did, I found it hard to put down. The tension as the book nears the final chapter is great and I found myself anxious to see where it would take us.
I listened to this as an audiotape, so perhaps the reader's voice played a role, but I found the characters to be wonderfully developed. Of course some of them were introduced in Chocolat, but Ms. Harris still stayed true to the characters she initially created.
My only concern with the plot was the fact that Vianne/Yanne trusted Zozie so quickly especially since she was so helpful to her without asking for anything in return. This seemed to go a bit against Vianne's natural instincts to be wary of the kindly ones.
If you haven't read Chocolat, you can still enjoy The Girl with No Shadow, but it certainly enhanced the experience if you had. While the story takes place 4 years later than Chocolat and is set in Paris, the history of Vianne, Anouk and Rosette is slowly revealed as is the background of Zozie.
