Johnny Got His Gun puts you inside Joe Bonham’s head to experience the horrors of war and its devastating brutality. By the end of the book Joe was inside my head. The stream of consciousness writing completely draws you in and never lets you leave the nightmare. Exceptional imagery and profoundly engaging. This is one of those books that will stay with you for a very long time. Highly recommended.

Difficult and slow book to read given the writing from the period. Not the type of anti-war book I was anticipating. The juxtaposition between the main character’s everyday struggles prior to the war (romance, family, work) against existential anguish after being gravely injured was extremely depressing and reflective. The final part of the book was almost a horror story within of itself. Maybe not a book that I would really recommend to most people….

“If you make a war if there are guns to be aimed if there are bullets to be fired if there are men to be killed they will not be us. They will not be the guys who grow wheat and turn it into food the guys who make clothes and paper and houses and tiles the guys who build dams and power plants and string the long moaning high tension wires the guys who crack crude oil down into a dozen different parts who make light globes and sewing machines and shovels and automobiles and airplanes and tanks and guns oh no it will not be us who die. It will be you.”
Just… wow. Phenomenal, but I’m sure most already knew that. But truly this is a read that will strike you when you don’t plan on it or expect it of what have you. Saw a little snippet on the last page that asked if this book’s still relevant, and I think it always will be. But we will always keep on learning and be there to, yes, live and read it. Wow.

I thought the first half was really compelling but i think once it got to part two the theme was understood and i think it would have been more powerful just as the first 10 chapters
