A powerful book. A wounded WW1 soldier slowly discovers his injuries...no nose,mouth,eyes, legs and arms. He ultimately discovers a way to communicate with the outside world by tapping his head and using morse code. He asks to go out... show the world his body... even display his body so the world would know war. They ultimaley decline his request. A strong story.

This was incredible in the most horrific way. Trumbo gets under your skin and puts you right in Joe's shoes. I'm not sure what else I can say about it except (no pun intended) that it knocked me off my feet.

A post WWI soldier wakes up after a shell explodes near him, leaving blind, deaf, and unable to speak. Bedridden and left with only his sense of touch Johnny lives in memories and a troubled present. The injuries incurred by Johnny are horrific, and some of the memories seem pointless and slow, but the thought processes of the character as he is teaching himself to communicate and understand with a single sense kept me intrigued throughout this story. As he learns how to evaluate the world around him, telling time by the vibrations of nurse visits and the warmth of the sun on his skin, among other things, he ranges through emotions building to a shocking and powerful ending.
