I'd like to give this book two reviews - five stars for the experience, sacrifice, and heroism that is chronicled, and one star for the quality and style of writing.

There is no doubt in my mind that Luttrell and his fellow SEALs are heroes. Anyone who willingly sacrifices so much on behalf of others is to be commended. The men of Operation Redwing are no exception. And although Luttrell expresses some strong opinions about the politics of war and the American media, it does not have to detract from his description of events.

The narrative itself is very informal and conversational in tone, making it feel more compelling. Unfortunately, this may also be the reason it feels poorly written. It doesn't have a natural flow and almost reads like 3 different books.

In this case, it might actually be that the movie is better.

Intense, detailed, and I couldn't put it down. This was the story of a man, his journey to become a SEAL, and his horrible experience on a mission where he was the last man standing of his team. WOW.

All I have to say is grab some tissues, blast some Toby Keith, and 'Merica.

Although this book was ranty at times, it tells an amazing story of heroism and survival. 5 stars.

I could not put this book down. It was hard to imagine what this brave man went through for our country. Thank you for your service.

Excellent tale of heroism

Some parts of it was way unneeded but it is an amazing tale of heroism under fire. He is a little full of himself but then that is mostly why he survived. A true American hero.

A little slow to start, but a really good book in the end.

This was really authentic and really heartbreaking. The authors do a great job of capturing Marcus Luttrell's authentic voice, and he is a SEAL, a patriot, and a conservative Christian Texan through and through. Many people take issue with some of his beliefs, but I don't, because they're his and he writes them well. This was a beautiful, action-packed story that my students really love.

Propaganda piece but still great read.

3.5. Legendary story, but thinking maybe he shouldn’t have written his own book. This is the rare case where the movie does a better job of explaining what happened.
