one of the best nonfiction military stories that I have read!

This book takes you through the incredible journey of Marcus Luttrell, starting when he's going through BUD/S training and the crazy thing that is hell week, all the way until he is rescued from the Afghan mountains after 3 of his buddies were killed. A large portion of the book is dedicated to the intense training SEALs do prior to deployment, which is fascinating to me. The actual "meat and potatoes" of the book is the account of Luttrell and his team as they embark on a mission to capture or kill a highly sought after Taliban leader. The stuff he talks about (falling 2 football fields down a near vertical rocky mountain, for example) just opens your eyes to the commitments and pure "no quit" attitude our military takes on each and every day fighting for our freedom.

This book was so good!!! By the end of the book i was in tears! After i finished it i just sat there soaking everything in!!!

I've never read so many swear words, but for the most part, they seemed valid as he was fighting for his life for a good portion of the book. I was also struck by how open and honest he was in his telling of everything. His bitterness towards the media, his pride of the seals, and especially how he felt the presence and guidance of God throughout it all.

This book shows us tragedy, humanity and ultimately a celebration of life. In order to understand what the men and women of the armed forces go through for the service of our country, this book is a large step in our realization that we have no idea what it's like to be in the line of fire, to watch our friends die and ultimately sacrifice everything. This is a very powerful read and I recommend this book to everyone!!

The riveting account of a Navy SEAL sniper caught alone in Afghanistan.

I found Lone Survivor drew me in much more than the comparable American Sniper. I felt for his family and was amazed at the events surrounding his ordeal. The description of BUDS training was an added bonus.

Somewhat shaky writing consistency but the incredible story just keeps you hooked untill the end. As mentioned elsewhere, the first part of the book, i.e. The training, was waaaaay too detailed and plain boring. Other than that, a thrilling read.

Very touching and fast paced account of operation Red Wings from Marcus' perspective. I cried, a lot, as I read, and finished it in one sitting because you just have to know what happens next. Marcus didn't sensor his way of speaking or thinking so prepare to be immersed in the psyche of a SEAL. It is hard, very hard, to read. But you'll be glad you do.
