My husband owns this book, has raved about it, and after seeing the movie, I was completely drawn to read the first-hand account (the movie was heartbreaking and amazing).
Politically, I am a middle-of-the-road moderate journalism major from the very liberal city of Seattle, so the times Luttrell talked generally about "liberals" and the "liberal media", it initially irked me. But I kept an open mind.
Honestly, that was the only slight issue with the book, an issue that I came to terms with as I read on because while I might not have 100% agreed, I began to understand where he was coming from given all he had to tell.
I thought this book was absolutely excellent. It was an interesting peek into the training and life of a SEAL, a fascinating perspective on the war overseas, and a heartbreaking tale of heroism and survival, and finally, an inspiring account about the goodness still present in humanity.
No matter your political position, this book challenges you and makes you think about good versus evil, ultimately. About the horror of war, and what that all really means and includes. It challenges you to think about what sacrifice really means, especially in the context of war. My husband and I had multiple rich discussions about all these things. And honestly, it truly made me understand who and what SEALs are, and how much they do. It's impressive.
I could go on and on, but honestly, just read the book and start your own discussion.
Excellent, excellent read.

POV: 1st Person
Genre: Military, Autobiographical
Thoughts: My brother recommended this book to me. It is one of the best books I have ever read. The detail and imagery Luttrell uses to portray his and his team's heroic acts leave you grateful and in awe of them. He invoked many emotions throughout the story and more than once I had tears running down my face. Truly an amazing and heart wrenching account of Operation Redwing.

This is a memoir from a soldier in Afghanistan about a combat operation that went wrong and only the author survived.
I think whether or not you agree with Luttrell's politics, it's important for Americans to read books that tell good and hard stories from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. It's a disservice to the men and women who fight in our military not to hear their stories.

I have a bit of an infatuation with Navy Seals and Navy Seal ops so it surely held my interest but I wouldn't say it was particularly well written. Looking forward to the movie.

I read this book because I watched the movie, and I am so glad that I did. Learning about Navy Seal operations is always interesting, and inspiring. I could never do a fraction of the things that these men put themselves through. Marcus Luttrell has an amazing fortitude. I enjoy his podcast and the work he does with Team Never Quit is just as inspiring as this book, and his other book. I cannot imagine being in the situation that these guys were. The guys who tried to rescue them that lost their lives, the team itself being caught out and surrounded and fighting to the last bullet and last man. Reconciling all that loss with the fact that you were the only survivor and to endure what he endured, yet still being so positive and trying to help everyone else keep that mentality is just truly, truly admirable and inspiring.

This was a great book, with the fifth star being withheld solely for some frustrating narrative repetitiveness, mostly during the first third. As an independent who is proudly not a Republican or a Democrat, the situational ethics of certain scenes were absolutely mind-boggling. Liberals and the main stream media get lampooned by Luttrell, and from his perspective, it's a fair criticism. The true story was also nothing like I expected. I went in thinking it was going to be a one by one knock off of the soldiers, ending with the titled lone survivor. I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say the lone survivor is really just the midway point in this incredible saga. I also found the ending carried an unexpected emotional punch. I would highly recommend it, and I am forever thankful to the sacrifices all of our servicemen and women make on a daily basis.
