This has always been one of my favorite stories of all time, but I did not expect myself to sob through this read. Maybe it was the timing—that I read it while I was already navigating a storm of emotions. But the beautiful thing about this story is how much of a balm it can be to a hurting heart.

Anne Shirley is probably my favorite literary character on account of the fact that I have been able to see myself in her in every stage of my life thus far. She is funny and fierce and lovable, and while her experience navigating adolescence is nothing like my own, her tenacity and imagination have inspired me like nothing else.

This book is a warm hug. The nostalgia of childhood. The scent of October on the wind. Wistful and welcome.

I enjoyed this book very much. I had never read it before and I can see why people love it and why people love Anne. I loved her growth and I loved her sweet heart.

Only review I've written, only one that matters. Give this to your daughters, your sons, your neighbors, your state representative. A Nova Scotian dream that we were not worthy to receive. I'll never get over the fact that I'm not a ginger and I don't know anyone named Gilbert. Sometimes life's not fair. I forgot to mention its the only thing that brings me inner joy.

The character work is spectacular. But the overly descriptive scenes were tiresome. Unnecessary tragedy that causes the plot to collapse rather than propel it forward. The relationship with Gilbert is honest to the time period, but frustrating and without satisfaction. Meh.

I found this on the bookshelves at a friend's while we were staying in Darwin (one of my favourite things to do is to trawl other people's bookshelves), and decided to pick it up for the first time. I was just in the mood for it, and loved it - Anne is such a delightful character, I can see why this is such a favourite for so many people.
