I grew up watching the PBS version of this book every chance that I could get, so I was nervous about reading the book again after so many years. I wish I had read it sooner. Anne's enthusiastic perspective on life widens my own "scope for the imagination," and I find myself living life with more awareness after reading it. I can relate to Anne's emotional ups and downs throughout her journey, and I just wish that this book didn't have to come to an end. My one complaint stems from the first chapter, where Marilla makes a couple of racist comments about children who are not originally from Canada. I feel the author could have easily left out those couple of sentences, as they are not at all in keeping with the overall positive, encouraging, Christian themes in the book.

Anne of Green Gables by L. M. Montgomery 1908  4
• Read by Loray Montgomery for Lit to Go on the Web at fcit.usf, edu
• I was completely charmed by the Maude Montgomery's classic.

• perforce- of necessity (we attended ~)
sorrel- a brownish orange to light brown color
refractory- 1 obstinate, stubborn, unmanageable 2 capable of enduring high temperature
tribulations- distress or suffering resulting from oppression or persecution; also : a trying experience
rigmarole- 1 confused or senseless talk 2 a complex and ritualistic procedure
beatification- 1 supremely happy 2 declared attainment of the blessedness/"Blessed" of heaven
suppliant- one who supplicates (makes humble entreaty) : pleader, petitioner
prepense- planned beforehand : premeditated ----usu. used postpositively <malice >
trice- vb to haul up or in and lash or secure (as a sail) with a small rope;  n a brief space of time : instant ---- used chiefly in the phrase 'in a trice'
• "Diana and I had such an affecting farewell down by the spring. It will be sacred in my memory forever. I used the most pathetic language I could think of and said ‘thou’ and ‘thee.’ ‘Thou’ and ‘thee’ seem so much more romantic than ‘you.’"
Youthful, pie in the sky, pious devotion. 😇
• perquisites-1 a priviledge, gain or profit incidental to regular salary or wages; esp : one expected or promised 2 gratuity, tip 3 something held or claimed as an exclusive right or possession
bedizen- to dress or adorn with gaudy finery
dissipation- 1c wasteful expenditure d intemperate living; esp : excessive drinking 2 diversion, amusement
flummery- 1 a soft jelly or porridge made with flour or meal b any of several sweet deserts 2 mummery, mumbo jumbo
• "“The trouble with you, Anne, is that you’re thinking too much about yourself. You should just think of Mrs. Allan and what would be nicest and most agreeable for her,” said Marilla, hitting for once in her life on a very sound and pithy piece of advice. Anne instantly realized this."
• liniment- a liquid preparation rubbed on the skin esp to relieve pain
anodyne- something that relieves pain (analgesic?) : a soothing agent
beset- 1 trouble, harass 2 assail; also : surround
• "Miss (Diana's Aunt Josephine) Barry was a rather selfish old lady, if the truth must be told, and had never cared much for anybody but herself. She valued people only as they were of service to her or amused her."
• Marilla's love for adopted Anne, "Her love made her afraid of being unduly indulgent, indeed."
• Anne, "I’ve pored over that geometry until I know every proposition"
I used to spell as poured. Pour, pore, poor me, poor, poor pitiful me.
• Saint Cuthbert, the saint of northern England, bringer of Christianity??
• Time waits for no one. The titmouse will twitter, the blossom bloom and the sun shine with or without you, me or Matthew. Completely charmed by the Maude Montgomery's classic. Yes the chapters are predictable: Anne gets herself in mess, gets out relatively unscathed, learns her lesson, moves on maybe minus her mane & time marches on. The ending is also predicable. Spoiler: our heroine wins.
