This book drove me BONKERS!! As a woman in STEM, the whole point of teaching is to explain to people in a way that is palatable and makes them want to understand and learn more. Also, streamlining is KEY. If I had to make coffee on a Brunson Burner every day I would DIE. Science does not have a be a whole smart women’s personality.
I read A LOT of books and genuinely I can say that this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. I also read this during my sociology class that is currently discussing gender and sexuality and I can confirm that this book is deeply sociological in a palatable and beautiful way. The prose, the characters, the plot, and the settings make this an extraordinary read that I know is going to stick with me for a very long time.
Quick note: do NOT judge the book by its cover I don’t believe the cover even begins to uphold the gravity of the book itself.

While there were things about this book that made it hard for me to connect to the reality of it - like how the 4 year old acted anything but that age. I found myself by the end, very invested. I wanted to see how it all played out. And I loved the story of so many woman, and what they did and fought for, and how it showed various layers of it. It wasn’t just Elizabeth, but so many more. And it was in the end, a beautiful story of not underestimating woman in any field.
this book made me realise i like breaking stereotypes in the 50s
