I met Hempel at the Juniper Writing Institute in June 2005. She read from this book and I bought it that night.

Picked this up at the library. I read and loved Tumble Home, and have been craving more of her work!

3.5 stars for me. Books of short stories are such a mix, which is what you either love or hate about them. I genuinely loved a few of these stories. If I had stopped halfway through the book I would have landed on 4 stars. But the last few stories were a little much for me. The author is clearly talented but ultimately this wasn't my cup of tea.

I'm using this book in my 2016 #vtReadingChallenge as a "book with an ugly cover" because it shows the dog paws sticking out of the frazzled, wiry hair.

I rather think that my lukewarm response to this book is a it's-not-you-it's-me situation. I'm in the doldrums these days and can't locate the joy with which I normally read even the crappiest book. Nonetheless, I was impressed by Amy Hempel's brutal economy. She gave me a kick in the heart every few pages, it seemed, and as much from what she did not say as what she did.

(3.5*) I'm sure I'll go back to reading Hempel again, now that I have just discovered her, and I wonder why it took me so long to do so, seeing that she's probably the most acclaimed female short story writer in the US today.

If it wasn't clear from the title (and many of the stories in the collection), wiki considers it very important to mention that Amy is a dog enthusiast. Advising all writers to mention their animal preferences in their bio!
