Wahrlich kein Meisterwerk, aber gerade noch so solide drei Sterne, weil am Ende noch schnell alles halbwegs befriedigend zusammengezimmert wird und die schlimmsten sich andeutenden Plotholes (wenn ich mit dem Schiff von Südafrika nach England reise lese ich die vermaledeiten Memoiren doch schon aus purer Langeweile?!) zugestopft werden.
1925 - fast 100 Jahre später kann man nur noch augenrollend zur Kenntnis nehmen, wie schamlos britisches Überlegenheitsgefühl in einem Mainstream-Roman ausgestellt wurde. Der heroische Gentleman aus gutem Hause, der, assistiert von einem Polizisten der „sein Geschäft versteht“ alles ordnet und sich am Ende gnädig herablässt, ein zurückgebliebenes Volk zu führen, auf dass es evolutionär vorankomme - natürlich nur um der Liebe einer echten Lady willen. Dahinter in absteigender Reihenfolge der hilfreiche Nebenrollen-Amerikaner, fast, aber nicht ganz auf Höhe des Briten, der französische Gentleman-Gauner der einen „würdigen“ Gegner abgibt, der jüdische Bankier der sein Geld zum Nutzen des Empire verleiht und daher an der guten Gesellschaft teilhaben darf, die rückständigen aber ehrenhaften Slawen die sich willig führen lassen, solange der Brite nicht die schlimmste aller denkbaren Sünden begangen hat - eine farbige Frau zu heiraten.

have never heard of her Superintendent Battle series. This doesn't age well due to its racism and demeaning sentiments about women. The men are as two-dimensional as the women; a bunch of woolly-minded males. Everyone is a one-dimensional cliche.
That said, I thought this book was hilarious. From the names to the ridiculous mystery to the curious propensity of the characters to ingress and egress or simply perch upon the windows, nothing about it says, "Take me seriously." It's my first Christie where the solution to the mystery fairly danced about on the pages. I just imagined Christie laughing the whole time, inviting us to enjoy this folderol.
(My lord--an inspector that talks so little--what a relief from the verbose Poirot!)
Edit: Read a couple of critiques of this book and its sequel. Yes, indeed, this book was intended to be a humourous poke at the genre.

One of my all-time favorite Agatha Christie stories. A romantic romp a la The Prisoner of Zenda, only more comic. Having just read her autobiography, I know that she was a fan of Anthony Hope's novel, so perhaps this was deliberate tribute.
Reread 2022 because Audible has put out a series of Agatha Christie novels free to members. Can't pass that up!
Have to add a note that this story is definitely of its time--which is to say that it reflects stereotypes which are now, 100 years later, repugnant to us. I'm willing to overlook that because the story is so good, but the cultural context did not age well.

Typical Christie, without Pierrot or Marples.
Confusing but entertaining story. I read the old 1978 edition and it was shockingly racist. Hopefully later editions have been cleaned up(?).
