3.5 stars. Overall, this mystery was better structured than it's predecessor, A Study in Scarlet, but it did feel a little drawn out. Despite that, I still enjoyed it and I'm excited to move on to the short stories. I think Doyle's writing style will be better suited to a pithier format.

Not Arthur Conan Doyle’s best work. I enjoyed reading some of the aspects that have now been developed into the BBC series ‘Sherlock’ e.g. Sherlock deducing that Watson’s sibling has a drinking problem; Toby the dog; Mary and John. Unfortunately, this is massively overshadowed by the pervasive racism and colonialism - it really did not age well.
