Pages and pages of all the trouble capitalism and patriarchy create, and frankly, it’s all the same now as it was in 1871. Dumb.

3.5 stars. Would have revived 4 stars if the story had been told in 500 pages instead of the close to 900.

Everything you think might happen as a plot device pretty much does happen, but even the expectation of it doesn't make it stale when you read it. Had the same kind of appeal to me as James's The Portrait of a Lady.

One of the best books I've ever read! The writing style is absolutely gorgeous and the story is gripping and emotional. It's a little slow at the start, but you can't put the book down once things start speeding up. The characters are so fleshed out that they feel real. I loved every single sentence!
