I loved the majority of this book. It was a little darker than I typically read with such explicit mentions of suicidal thoughts. However, I found the plot compelling and the shifting perspectives didn't turn me away. I even found the deaths to be reasonable in response to the circumstances the. Characters were in. The reason I'm giving this a lower rating is because there were moments throughout the book where I genuinely thought to myself "there's no way this character would say that" and it drew me out of the story. Specifically in two scenes: one where Bernard basically says that Mayor Jahns can eat shit and die (and then literally kills her) and one where Knox suddenly is Karl Marx and can give amazing speeches even thought before this he was the string, silent, and broody type. Both of these instances were so far out of left field for me that I had to lower the rating. I am excited to read the next book in the series though!

One of the wave of books made possible via Amazon's self-publishing platform and popularized via word of mouth and grass roots popular acclaim.

Could have been titled "Mary Sue in the Fallout Vault". :) There was absolutely nothing original here- the post apocalyptic setting is a shameless copy of the Fallout video game's vaults. (Which wasn't particularly original to begin with).

The characters are standard hero archetypes. Despite that it was a thoroughly enjoyable and fast paced read. Though for something that spanned 500 pages we should have gotten something better in the way of character development or world building.

I wish I had someone to talk through this with as I read; this would be a fun one to theorize about throughout. There were a few subtle turns I hadn’t exactly been expecting.
I didn’t have a strong connection to any character, because
most new characters with a perspective would die! It made me emotionally disconnect, which I can see being an interesting tactic on behalf of the author, but as someone who loves a journey with character growth, it was a bit of a bummer for me.
It’s a great premise and it’s told well, but I don’t know that I’ll be continuing the series. I’m excited to watch the show.
