0 stars obviously but that’s not why i’m here.

I just want to point out a recurring theme that i’ve noticed throughout not just penelope douglas’ books, but the new steamy-tik tok genre as a whole.

The idea of what consent is is majorly fucked up within all of these books. They all have scenes that are inherently non-consensual, but even bigger than that is the authors trying to convince us that those scenes are actually practicing consent.

In this book, I couldnt help but laugh at the stupidity of it all when the horsemen (stupid fucking name by the way) went through with their plan, but michael, suddenly, pulls out and isn’t ok with it because “she’s not on board” and they “only said they’d do it if she was on board”. that’s practicing consent, right? wrong! because the plan was literally to rob this woman of all her possessions, kidnap her mother and then her, hold her against her will and “make her theirs” (heavily  implying they are going to use her as a sex slave, although thats never said explicitly, probably to try and convince the readers that somehow they will just be nice and kind to this girl! even though they’ve talked the whole book about “what they want to do to her”!). what kind of idiot would ever truly believe she would consent to this! the only reason michael backed out is because this freak damon almost rapes our protagonist, which michael suddenly objects to, even though the entire book damon was saying that that was exactly what he was gonna do once they kidnapped her. multiple times in this book we see damon assault girls but it’s treated as unimportant and merely a character flaw rather than a huge fucking problem that makes him a deranged lunatic. for gods sake, he knows how to roofy someone! why are you friends with this man!

as tik tok makes these types of books more known to younger people, it’s important to recognize that the depiction of a messed up form of consent has extreme ramifications. rape is never justified, ms douglas.

(look at the content warnings and tell me how the fuck this is marketed as a romance)

The book itself regarding the writing of the story and characters as well as those things itself was good. It just wasn’t for me and though I often enjoy dark romance I just couldn’t get comfortable how they sexualised her fear. I get that spark that comes with a little fear play but I feel like sometimes the female mc was just straight up frightened and I couldn’t get behind how someone would find joy in that or how she could be turned on herself. Also a big point for me is the miscommunication I mean if they would’ve just talked a lot of things would’ve turned out drastically different. In the end it definitely is a good book I simply couldn’t identify with the morals of the characters which made me not being able to enjoy the book and also not read any further books in the series.

What in the what wattpad story did I just force myself to read. This book was confusing from start to end and really, the only good thing was the writing. The plot was so confusing and I absolutely haded the characters. Warning: Erika is a weal character who thinks she’s different from other girls but all she does is let herself be controlled and manipulated by everyone around her. The time skips are really hard to keep up with so you don’t start understanding the conflict or even the plot until 85% into the book.
it was so obvious from the beginning Logan was the bad guy. I guess the only twist was exactly how they accomplished it
. Overall it was extremely cringey and I really had to force myself to get through it. Also TRIGGER WARNING FOR R**E!!!! It gets thrown around like nobody’s business and basically ignored by all the characters. The whole plan to get revenge on Erika was disgusting and sick and I cannot believe everyone just moved past it like nothing. The whole “Four Horsemen” thing was weird and confusing and makes me think the author is extremely out of touch with reality like seriously a group of 16 year olds in town getting away with blatant crimes and terrorizing the town while adults are too scared to stand up to them? *eye roll*
NEVER RECOMMEND TO ANYONE
