I was not crazy about the characters to begin with, especially Dina and Om. But as I read more, and relationships developed and walls came down, I began to like them a little better. This is a plus. This is good writing: I liked the slow unfolding of the characters, of getting to know them and their back stories. But I will say this: this was a well-written book, a lovely piece of literature, but it will break your heart. So just be warned.

I absolutely loved parts of this book. It was always one step forward and two giant falls back. I learned so much but really wanted to see the group happy. The ending ruined the entire book.
This is a complex novel set in 1970's India during the Emeregnecy period. i did enjoy the writing and story. However the one thing that did bug me was despite being a novel off over 500 pages, there is a very small cast of characters. Consequently there lives are a misery and tragedy is never far away. I do accept that these events happened at the time, but these poor people really do cop a lot of grief.
