A very sad and yet sweet book. Strangers becoming family even if hesitantly and the end is a terrible combination of tragedy and sentiment. Not many will like this book because it has no happy endings and yet I would still recommend it to the strong hearted.

The genre is Dickensonian poverty porn. You grow to love the characters and hate the Indian society. A more callous and superstitious society cannot be imagined. It's easier to stop staring at a disfigured person than it is to stop reading this book once you get started. You feel just as dirty afterwards.

A long and very detailed read ... it was quite some time ago but it was quite the book. Recommended reading.

I cried so hard after finishing this book I had a headache for three days. That said, it is one of the best books I have ever read and I think about it often.
