Again with this collection, I’m kind of rapt. I really want to explore this whole idea further and need at least a longer novella to expand on everything.
This one felt particularly short in the most annoying way. Just give me at least 150 pages please

That's definitely my least favorite story, just because it felt alien to this collection.
It's a good story about the future we choose for our kids and how far would we go in doing that and free will, but it could've been better, or just not combined with the stories in this collection. I'm guessing Amor Twoles isn't a sci-fi writer and I'm surprised he participated in this.
I would've loved if he went with the idea of alternative realities and played with it more, but it was so tame.

One of those rare times when none of the above was probably the best possible answer, so at least the main character got that right. The 2 stars is because they somehow managed to convince David Harbor to narrate this but by the end of it even he sounded fed up with it.

This was a really interesting novella engaging with ideas of technology and how it could be applied to the growing industry of fertility treatments and pregnancy ethics. It may also intersect in subtle ways with how willing we are as a society to give our DNA to companies in exchange for some personal information, without fully knowing if that DNA is then destroyed, stored, used, or sold elsewhere.
Ultimately how much control would people like to have over what kind of person their baby could turn out to be? Would we stop at hair color, sex, eye color, or would we go so far as control personality, markers of success, and even someone's future? There are so many interesting implications of these ideas, which made me think of the pressures and expectations that would be placed on a child from birth, more so than already exist, especially if that baby were created with certain ends in mind. How would this impact families and self worth and the ideas of destiny and/or free will?
Ultimately the story is a little too focused on the male prospective father protagonist and falls a little into some cliched masculinity tropes, but all in all this was a fascinating read that I enjoyed and made me think a lot, which is the sign of pretty great literature.
