I had to listen to this twice because I zoned out so much on my first listen. The premise is so interesting, execution not so much!!

1.5 stars

Four stars because I didn't completely understand what was going on here, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wow

Excellent read. Now I have to find A Gentleman in Moscow. The Audible version also so easily captures the imagination.

This shorter novella by Amor Towles takes on a very hefty topic – genetic engineering. It explores the question: is it nature, nurture, both, or a new way of raising a child? Brilliantly written, Towles tackles this subject in a creative way, pulling the reader into the life of one couple who wants to have a child and finally decides to put in an application to a fertility clinic. Told through the voice of the husband, we get insight into his thinking. And what starts out as looking into a new way of “engineering” the conception of a child, Sam begins to look at his life – his relationships and choices he’s made. This story is a deep dive into the highly debated topic and how that is a springboard for Sam to look at his life.

Sam's wife tells him about Vitek, a fertility lab that allows you to chose what traits your child will have. Sam agrees it could be a great idea until he begins to consider the future of a child with preconceived aspirations and IQ, he begins wondering about his own life, and his ability to chose. Good story of genetic engineering gone rogue.
