Okay so, this was weird. I was following along just fine until it got to the end and then... what even happened? It felt so jumbled and rushed, I didn't really "get it". I definitely think it needed more time/pages to get the full story and concept across, because there was definitely something missing.

I don't get it. This started out really interesting, but the ending lost me.

This book just wasn’t my jam. I chose it because I like Amor Towles and this one was short but books that don’t have plot or character development and open ended ending are…meh.

Sam and his wife are trying to get pregnant they decide to go with state of the art invitro. For whatever reason, she goes first and picks three “kids” for him to choose from while sitting next to some sales guy and while drinking gin and tonics. He spends most of the time thinking about why Annie would choose the three she chose and to be honest…I wondered the same thing. He leaves the IVF place, goes to a bar, gets drunk and starts talking to some regular and the bartender. A black eye, petty theft and driving under the influence later…he ends up back at the bar with what I can only assume was his semen. Idk, I stopped caring and that was the end anyway.

Solid 3.5*, interesting premise and execution, but I feel the author’s energy kind of fizzled by the time the ending got written. The genetic engineering plot point was well built, the moral dilemmas - shown, but not thrown in your face. Overall - worth the 90-ish minutes of listening/

4.5 stars - Incredible. I really loved it.

Incredibly thought-provoking and fascinating concept. I have now read 5 of the 6 short stories in this collection and so far this one is far, far in the lead for being the best. Which, that’s not surprising given how wonderful his novel, [b:A Gentleman in Moscow|34066798|A Gentleman in Moscow|Amor Towles|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1551480896l/34066798._SY75_.jpg|45743836] was. The narration of the audiobook was done by the actor that plays Jim Hopper on Stranger Things - great choice for the story.

Favorite Quote: Our lives are intricate and multifaceted. But they also tend to have a larger arc that takes us from a position of youthful self-assurance through a period of setbacks, leading to a third phase in which, if we’re lucky, we’ve confronted our limitations and become deeper people ready to lead richer lives.

First Sentence: It had been years since Sam had been this far out on the expressway.
