Enthralling story, gorgeously written, with a fascinating idea. The plot fell apart for me in the second half, though. I feel like so much more could have been done with this setup.

Solid concept, disappointing ending. I really liked the first half-to-three-quarters of this story but the ending left me cold. I think this concept would do really well as a full novel with more space to explore the concept and especially
the truth about Vitek
.

I do think it achieved what it set out to do, which is to provoke thought about our own philosophies, whether we would use that kind of service, whether such a service should even exist, etc, and what the unintended (or even intended but nefarious) consequences may be. But the ending felt very abrupt and kind of jolted me out of the world before I really had chance to process it.

All in, worth a read if you don't mind doing a bit of "homework" in terms of interrogating the themes presented without having any plot to draw you along after the ending.

3 stars. Really great writing but wasn't very interesting. There wasn't much to it to me and I didn't feel anything for it one way or another. I think because the two previous short stories were so fantastic that I had gotten my hopes up. Jemisin and Crouch have set the bar for this series and I need to learn to let that go so that I can go into the rest of these with an open mind. 3 stars for the writing though and I wouldn't mind looking more into this author's work.
