A fantastic book that clearly described small town mentality towards gay couples as well as the difficulty of a gay man in the Army.Crick and Deacon were fantastic characters that with an amazing humanity, that made me ache for them both.I wish that more families were like Deacon and Parish who are kind, loyal and patient. Amy Lane's writing is fantastic and I cannot wait to get my hands on some of her other books.

Absorbing and sentimental. I can see why so many people love it, but the sentimentality both engrosses me and makes me feel a little dirty after. Manipulated. The goopy happiness of the extended family feels more wish fulfillment than reality to me -- not that extended family/family of affinity can't work, but that there's so little friction except around Deacon being too perfect.

Amy Lane manages to do something I usually dislike and make me love it. Sometimes it was a little confusing - I think some of the formatting for the ebook was a little off - but it was interesting, so I didn't care. What she did was a little back and forth with the timeline, Crick or Deacon remembering this or that while experiencing something related somehow. Well done. Meaningful.

Thinking about the whole story now, it's very cool to see how these characters grew and yet, in essence, stayed the same good, loving, fiercely loyal people they started as, despite all the overwhelming, horrid things thrown at them.

This is an awesome story. Very curious now what she'll do with book 2...

I picked this book of the M/M romamce group...it was good, I liked the love story, but also really liked the secondary characters...they are really strong and loving...but also struggling...seriously struggling, they never give up on each other and say the truth even when it's really hard. Deacon and Crick seriously broke my heart they were so adorable...have bought the second one in the series and will surely ge the third one when it comes out.

I'm not sure what happened to me with book this time...but I could not stop crying. I loved this book when I first read it, but I think I missed so much. Crick and Deacon are two incredibly moving characters SO FLAWED, SO PERFECT...I suffered deeply for this to me for their losses, the hardships of growing up too fast, the hurt that they brought unto to themselves and each other...but the constancy and unrelenting certainty that they were each other's to hold...so good. Deacon represents faithfulness and strength in all the ways that are obvious and he is such a force...but I think Crick is too, for a boy who never knew love from those who were supposed to give it to him unconditionally I found it so brave that he could love Deacon so deeply, so long and with so much faith that he would eventually be loved back.

My frustration and anger at all the hiding Crick and Deacon had to do while Crick was in Iraq...how unfair and cruel that men who are putting their lives at risk cannot openly say I love you to the men they love.

This book is about family and strength in love...So very excellent.

I loved this. Crick and Deacon were fabulous characters. I really liked the journey they went on together. There was plenty of angst and conflict with a satisfying resolution.

THE MOTHERFUCKING FEELZ.

This is my third Amy Lane book. From reading those three and perusing her catalogue, I've come to the following conclusions:

1. She's not always so good at naming these things.

Before I read a word of her, I was turned off by odd, off-putting, or juvenile-sounding titles. I've been kicking myself ever since, for allowing that to get in the way of enjoying her writing.

2. She's got some serious storytelling Kung-Fu.

Serious. Legit-legit. Like, weeping onto your e-reader serious. Like, laughing so hard you fart, serious. Like, never forget the words so long as you live, serious. The girl's got a gift, and it manifests in spectacular plenitude throughout. This, friends, is an absurdly compelling story that will gut you as easily as it will require a change in underpants.

3. The girl can write.

Thus I bow my head in prayer: O My Lord in Heaven, You should probably proceed to bestow Your divine beneficence upon somebody else, for verily she has her bloody share, obvs.

I am in love with Amy Lane.

I just love Crick and Deacon. Supporting cast is great. But did every friend of Crick's have to die? Geez. I kind of wish some of the friends/family had been more Team Crick. I felt bad for him that almost everyone completely blamed him for the Grand Misunderstanding. I understand that it's because they were living through it with Deacon but still. I didn't like how Step-Bob and Crick's mother kept getting away with everything. I know it happens in real life, but some comeuppance would've be fantastic.
