As I Lay Dying was... a trip. I'm not really sure if I loved it or not because it inspired, confused, entertained and irritated me in probably about equal parts. I wanted to love it, but I also wanted to rebel against it. I wanted to call it genius, but I also wanted to proclaim it largely nonsensical. But then that's what a good book's supposed to do, right? Give you a story, but also stir things up inside you.
What I found unbearably admirable is Faulkner's talent for world-building through his characters, the way their interactions and internal responses to the outside world blend together to give a sense of time, space, their place within them and in a larger cultural aspect. I don't remember reading too many descriptions of people's appearances or their relationships with each other, yet I got a very clear picture in front of me of who these characters are. They all came to life on the page, with their own voices so different from each other, yet so similar and so connected.
A strange thought I kept having while reading As I Lay Dying, and which is probably too bizarre to make any sense, is how much some parts of the writing remind me of... Tori Amos lyrics from her Boys for Pele, Under The Pink or From the Choirgirl Hotel albums. I know this is just me being overly silly, but the several strands of thoughts which sometimes connect, other times don't, which jump from sheer beauty of language to the most illogical cluster of words and which strike you like a slap in the face once combined, left this strangely exciting (for me) association.

Blew my mind. One of the most poetically dense books of fiction I’ve ever read. Favorite book of all time, sharing a place only with East of Eden.
