This book was written in 1930 at the start of the Great Depression. The language and scenes which are described might be offensive for some people. So fair warning. As the book progresses, the 1st person narrative alters between many people and time frames. At times, it is hard to understand who is providing the dialogue. Given the limited education of the main family, what they are even trying to describe at time is difficult to understand. But what is clear is that there is a class system between "city people" and "those people". This book provides a snap shot of the people, stereotyping, hypocritical Christianity, and above all the impact of a poor education for the times. For a person that loves the twist and turns of a modern day murder mystery, this is not your kind of book.

But for people that love history and the understanding of lives outside your own circle, this is unique and different. I am glad that I read it. But, it's unlikely I will recommend it to anyone else.

so, i did like this, but i actually wanted more! i’d really like to hear jewel’s point of view (he, darl, and cash were my favorite characters).
Spoilerand i was expecting the author to tell of when they actually buried addie but they didn’t? and the ending? why?
i think this is a book i'd definitely have to dive deep into to get a fuller understanding (i used sparknotes to interpret some things) but i just don’t feel like doing that right now… otherwise, it was a well written book; i loved the depiction of religion and how the characters differed in the way they thought of what a christian is/how important religion is to them, and how they all dealt with their grief in different ways. the characterization was what really makes this book beautiful too...

Poderoso, pungente, perfeito.
