Will have to read this again and again to really decide how I feel about it. Which is, I guess, what makes Faulkner fabulous.
15/10 would read again.

"In the afternoon when school was out and the last one had left with his little dirty snuffling nose, instead of going home I would go down the hill to the spring where I could be quiet and hate them."

As I Lay Dying rightfully deserves its place in the American canon simply for what Faulkner does with language. That his experiments with narrative voice and perspective in this novel (and others of his) have had a profound effect on American (and international) letters cannot be denied.

I do have to say that beyond the prose itself, I felt that I connected more with the tragic characters of The Sound and the Fury than with the Bundrens of As I Lay Dying. I think people should read this novel, but more to gain a genealogical understanding of the development of Modernism more than anything else, really.

I was fascinated with this dysfunctional family. I feel slightly guilty for enjoying the storyline because it was such a catastrophe for everyone involved. Faulkner's style of writing was difficult to understand, which is why I only gave it three stars.
